Space Exploration Timeline

  • Sputnik 1 was launched by the Soviet Union

    This was the first satalite launched into space in human history. This was important, because it started the "space race" between the U.S which brought new technology and innovations.
  • Sputnik 2 sends first living thing into space.

    Sputnik 2 contained the first living thing to go into space. It was a dog named Laika. It showed the Soviet Union's intention of sending a man into space.
  • Explorer 1 is launched by the U.S.A

    Explorer was the first satalite launched by the U.S. in response to the Soviet Union launching Sputnik 1.
  • NASA was formed

    NASA ( the National Areonautics and Space Administration) was formed in response to the Soviets launching Sputnik 1. NASA would build and launch any future U.S. spacecrafts.
  • Luna 1 is the first spacecraft to reach the moon

    Luna 1 is the first spacecraft to reach the moon. Luna 1 did not land on the moon. It was a step closer to landing on the moon.
  • The Soviet Union launches first man into space aboard Vostok 1

    The Soviet Union launched Vostok 1 which contained the first human to enter space. The man's name was Yuri Gagargin.
  • The U.S.A sends their first man into space abord freedom 7

    The U.S.A sends their first man into space in response to the
  • First American to orbit the Earth aboard Friendship 7

    Friendship 7 contained the first American to orbit the earth. The man's name was John Glenn. This proved the U.S. had the technology for long space flights.
  • President John F. Kennedy announces the U.S.A plans to send a man the moon

    This speech given by President John F. Kennedy tells the U.S. that the goal is to send a man to the moon by the end of the decade.
  • Apollo 11 contains first man to land on the moon

    Apollo 11 was the first spacecraft to land on the moon containing a human. The Apollo 11 crew was able to gain data and samples about the moon. This ultimatly brought an end to the space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
