  • Russia launched "Sputnik 1"

    Russia launched "Sputnik 1"
The Soviets launched the world's first artificial satellite, "Sputnik 1", into space. The "Sputnik 1" gave the world important facts and details about the Earth. This satellite was a very important part of space travel because if it wasnt successfully invented, we probably wouldnt have invented rockets or found out about safe space travel. In conclusion, "Sputnik 1" was basically the starting point of space travel.
  • Explorer 1 was launched by U.S.A

Explorer 1 was launched by U.S.A
The Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched into space by U.S.A. They launched this satellite because they were shocked that the Soviets launched their own and wanted to top the Soviets. This was an important event because the Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched into space by the Americans. As for the world, Explorer 1 was the second satellite launched into space. Americans were second because the first satellite was launched by the Soviets on October 4, 1957.
  • NASA was created in the U.S.A

NASA was created in the U.S.A
The NASA is the National Aeronautics Space Administration. NASA brought together many scientists and engineers. The scientists and engineers solved the technical problems of space flight. The NASA being created was an important event in history because they discovered more things about new planets and important facts about outer space.
  • Luna 3 Orbited The Moon

The Luna 3 was launched by the Soviet Union and it took pictures of 70% of the moon's surface. This was important because it was the 3rd spacecraft that successfully made it to the moon and it was the 1st spacecraft to come back from the moon with pictures.
  • Soviets launched first human into space

Soviets launched first human into space
The first human that traveled to space was Yuri Gagarin. He orbited the Earth one time while aboard the Vostok 1. This was a very important event because Yuri Gagarin was the very first human being to successfully go into space, orbit the Earth and come back safely. This was very impressive for the Soviets because if they didnt discover how to get into space successfully, the world might not even know what an astroid is yet.
  • First American in Space

    First American in Space
Alan Shepard was the first American launched into space. His flight into space lasted about 15 minutes. He went 116 miles high and then came back down, Alan was aboard the Freedom 7 for this event. This event was important because Alan Shepard was the first American to go into space. This also made them even with the Soviets, now that they both had a person go into space successfully.
  • Virgal (Gus) Grissom was the second American in Space

He was aboard the Liberty Bell 7, while he was launched into space, which lasted 15 minutes. This was an important event because he was the second American in space and he survived through one of his shoots popping, which made his spacecraft fill with water. His spacecraft sank to the bottom of the ocean but he quickly made it out before it sank.
  • First American to Orbit Earth

    First American to Orbit Earth
John Glenn was the first American to successfully orbit the Earth. The average time of a human being in space is 15 minutes, but John Glenn orbited the Earth three times and came back successfully aboard the Friendship 7 capsule. This was a great moment for Americans because not only was John Glenn the first American in space, he was the first person in the world to orbit the Earth three times. He was given the NASA Distinguished Service Medal by President John F. Kennedy for his accomplishment.
  • U.S spacecraft, Surveyor, landed on the moon

U.S spacecraft, Surveyor, landed on the moon
Between 1964 and 1972, the U.S.A and the Soviet Union launched many unpiloted spacecrafts to the explore the moon. On May 30, 1966, the Americans launched a spacecraft called Surveyor. This was a success because this spacecraft discovered that people are able to walk on the moon and spacecrafts can land on the moon. This was discovered by the Surveyor landing on the moon without sinking. This accomplishment proved that the moon was solid and safe for landing on the moon successfully.
  • First Man To Walk On The Moon

While orbiting the moon, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin entered a spacecraft called Eagle while they were orbiting the moon. On July 20, the Eagle headed towards a flat surface on the moon's surface. Neil Armstrong radioed that the Eagle had landed and everyone cheered at NASA in Houston, Texas. A few hours later, Armstrong and Aldrin exited the Eagle and walked on the moon. This was important, because they were the first people to walk on the moon's surface successfully.
