    Noble Order of the Knights of Labor
    Noble Order was created by the garment workers in Phiadelphia. They created to try and get equal pay for equal work, abolition of child labor, and an eight hour work day. This labor union was open to farmers, merchants and wage earners.
  • American Federation Of Labor

    American Federation Of Labor
    American Federation of Labor is also know as the AFl. The AFL was a labor union workign form better conditioins, better pay, The AFL was a labor union for the craft oriented jobs.
  • The Haymarket Square Riot

    The Haymarket Square Riot
    The Riot was started in Chicago by the workers at the McComick Harvesting machine. The workers wanted to have there work day shorten to 8 hours. Ploice were called to break up the strike. A bomb was set off and 8 police officers were killed, along with 100s injured.Anarchists, or anti-government people were blamed for the violence at the Strike.

    "How the Other Half Lives" was a book revealing the way poor peole lived in New York City. Jacob Riis, creater of the book, went into some of the Tenements and described the living conditions. Along with the describition was also pictures, the book is also a photojournalism peice.
  • Homestead Strike

    The Homestead Strike was started by the workers at steel workers in Pittsburgh. The strike was one of the most serious dipsutes in US labor History. It was a battle between Strikers and Private Security Agents. The battle lasted untill july 6,1892. In the end the Strike set back the Unions for steel works as the steel workers lost.
  • Pullman Strike

    Pullman Strike
    Pullman was a town the was a major good producer with living quarters for its workers and their family. The wages were cut for all the workers.This casued a major problem when the owner of the town, George M. Pullman, won't lower the rent prices. Workers went on strike and cut off railroads in 27 states. The Federal government was forced to send militia and breakup the strike. The Union lost and set them back once again.

    Labor day was created to celebrate working men and women. This is a day where the workers get to rest and enjoy them selfs.It was created in the late 19th centrury and is celebrated the 1st monday in september. For many American this shows the end of the summer and many have picnics and many more fun activities to celebrate.
  • Coal Strike

    Coal Strike
    This started in the eastern part of Pennsylvaina, wher the anthracite coal is found. Coal from this region supplied many major cities and it threatened the winter fuel supply. President Theodore Roosevelt became invovled in this to try and stop it. He was susessful and suspended the strike. The strike never came about again. Miner received more pay for less hours. This was the first time in US history that the government was made to intervene and help resovle issues with business and workers.

    "The Jungle" was written by a man by the name of Upton Sinclair. Sinclair was a mucckraker, who when into the Chicago Meat Paking Plant. Why he was in the Plant he noted things. He the wrote "The Jungle" about these things

    Early in the 1900's, there were no laws prohibiting children of any age from working anywhere. Children at the age of 7 to 18 were working dangerous jobs. John Spargo wrote about this. He did research and saw what death young kids were suffering from. Then he wroth "The Bitter Cry of Children.

    When the book "The Jungle" came out many people thought that the federal government should get invovled in the food industry. That is was the Pure Food and Drug Act did. It allowed the government to inspection the products that would be going out for people to buy. They federal government would inspect the product and if it was not good they had the power to forbide transportation till it was fixed.

    The Triangle shirt Factory Fire cause is unknow for sure what it was.. It started in the trash can on the 8th floor. But quickly grew out of control. After the fire happen government then saw that they should get invovled in the businesses more. In 1909 workers in the Triangle Shirt Factory had gone on strike and asked for better working conditions and never got it. In the fire the doors locked and the fire escape collasped. There for killing 126 people.

    Congress of Industrial Organization was part of the AFL till 1935. Then this group was on its own. It was on its own due to disagreements of the Congress of Industrial Orgainzation and AFL. The Congress of Industrial Organization was no longer on its own in 1955. This is when it rejoin under the AFL.

    This law passed from the legislation had made the government pro-labor. The National Labor Relations Act also creat a board called the National Labor relations Board. This law also gave the government power to punish unfair labor practices.
  • GM Sit -Down Strike

    The strike started in Flint, Michigan. This sit-down strike allowed the workers to prove a point and catch the general publics' attention. Sit down strike allowed the people to go to work while doing nothing and not letting strike brokers do there jobs.

    This act regulated child labor. Back before the act was passed children of young ages were working jobs unfit for an adult of any age to do let alone children. This law regulated that only children of a certain age can work a certain about of hours. Before this law was handed to the states to deal with. Now the Federal government is the only one who says who can work and what they can do.
  • Steel Strike

    The United Steelworkers of America against the US steelmakers is what started the event of a strike. The strike was scheduled to start the 9th of April but, the President stepped in to stop it. The Steel compaines then sued the goverenment. The supreme court ruled that the President was in the wrong. The steelworkers went to strike and got ther advance in their paychecks.
  • Major League Baseball Strike

    This was the first players' strike in the history or Majro League. Baseball was missed over April 1,1972 to April 13, 1972. This caused 86 total games to be missed. Eventually owners and players met an agreements on an increase in pension at $500,000.
  • New York City Transit Strike

    New York City Transit Strike
    This Strike was workers from transportation part of NYC. The workers wanted a new contract with metropolitan Transportation Authorit broke down over retirement, pension, and wage increase. The strike began at 3 in the morning. Halting all subway and buses survices and causing all of NYC residents to commute differently and a big desruption in the cities. The strike ended 2 days earlier.
