Hi fi stands for high fidelity, a hifi system is a music system usually used at home to listen to music. A hifi system should have at least 3 parts, the source, the amplification and speakers. -
music videos
The first music video is said to be 'Stranger in paradise' by Tony Bennet. Music videos became increasingly popular in the 1980s with the introduction of MTV (music television) with the buggles playing 'video killed the radio star'. MTV became a new way to listen to music and helped alot of smaller british bands break in america. -

Analog mixing desks was invented in 1958. They allow multiple analogue imputs to be mixed together in real time. They are said to be easier to use for beginners than digital mixing desks. -

Robert Moog invented the analog synthesizer. It can be used in a recording or performance setting. Its used to make audio singnals through different types of synths. -
cassette (sony walkman)
Sony released the worlds first portable music player in 1979. The cassette stored the audio and the walkman device read the audio files and the device itself transmitted the audio through headphones. -
MIDI
Dave smith invented musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) in 1982 in california. Midi encodes keyboard functions rather than recording sound waves. Midi can be a device in itself or it can be software loaded onto a computer. -
portable cd player
Portable cd players were invented in 1984 with the introduction of the discman from sony. They were used for listening to music when away from the indoor environment. It was battery powered and included a headphone jack. -
digital mixing desk
Yamaha invented the first digital mixing desk in 1987. These are used in a studio and a live setting. The difference between a digital mixing desk and an analog mixing desk is in the way the audio is processed. -

Pro tools is a digital audio workstation released in 1991 by Evan Brooks and Peter Gotcher for avid technology. It can be used on a windows or a mac computer. -

ADAT (Alesis Digital Audio Tape) has eight different channels that can be used to connect differetn audio equipment. It can be used in the studio or for live sound. -
logic pro
Logic pro is a digital audio workstation, developed by a german company called C-lab. Apple bought the software in 2002 meaning that it would no longer run on windows and only apple apple devices. Logic is used for recording. -
MP3
MP3 is a very popular way to listen to music. Digital files could be stored on a number of devices and were much easier to organise than cd files. MP3 can be used in recording studios as a format to record audio and is also used for casual listening. -
limewire
Limewire was a music downloading site, that was very popular in the 2000s. Tracks were free to download and often had very poor sound quality and were incomplete. Limewire was shutdown by the american federal court in 2010. -
youtube
Youtube is a video sharing platform introudced in 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim in California. Google bought the site in 2006. Artists can upload videos themselves or through a label. Its is used mainly for streaming music and for watching videos. Bands can also advertise their music on the site. -
spotify
Spotify is an online music streaming service, founded in 2006 but being launched in 2008. Artists are payed on average $0.00348 per stream. -

Apple music is a music streaming subscription service ran by apple. Artists get paid $0.00735 per stream. Subscribers can pick and choose witch songs to listen to on demand.
