Creation of the Black Codes
Theblack codes were created to control the freedom of freed slaves. These codes regulated the lives of black americans. They claimed that if an african american was unemployed, they could be arrested and sentenced to work agricultural labor. These codes served as a way for southerners to legally control the lives of african americans. -

jim crow laws
The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965. The laws mandated racial segregation in all public facilities. Schools, public bathrroms, public buses, and other public facilities where segregated. Even the military was segregated. These laws restricted the civil rights and civil liberties to African Americans. -
Tuskegee
Booker T. Washington founded the Tuskegee institute for african americans. This institute is a vocational school modeled after the Hampton Institute. -
Plessy Vs. Ferguson
Homer Plessy was arrested for sitting in the all "white" car on the railroad. This created the "seperate but equal" statement This means that it was found stil constitutional to mark serparate facilities for white and colored people as long as the facilities were equal. -
NAACP
The NAACP was founded to help afrcan americans acheive equality in society. They pressed for equal rights from voting to reaching the same level of education as white people had. -
The great migration
The great migration was the mass movement of african americans leaving the south heading to northern cities in search of a better life. Many of these african americans left the south to escape the jim crow laws and prejudices of being colored in the southern states. -
Ku Klux Klan
By the 1920s The klan had more than two million members. They showed extreme hatred against african americans. They used violent tactics to intimidate and scare people they opposed. They were a strong social and political force because many people that were in power, were members. The klan mostly died down by the 1940s due to loss of membership because of violent tactics. -
Harlem Renaissance
The harlem renaissance was a huge social movement played a huge role in the advancement of african americans. This was a reform of black literature, art and intellect. Many african americans found jobs and began to prove to society that they were worthy of equality. -
Lynchings
By the 1930s almost 3000 african americans had been lynched by white mobs. Lynchings were often open social events among the white race to promote white supremacy and intimidate african americans. Many people justified lynchings as a way to protect white women against "dangerous" blacks. -
Murray v. Maryland
In 1938 donald murray became the first african american to graduate from the university of maryland law school. Murray contested the separate but equal statemnt. he was separate but not treated equally. he was taught by one teacher in a separate classrom. -
Sweatt v Painter
heman sweatt applied to the university of texas law school and met all materials for an acceptable application accept for his skin color. He pressed for the separate but equal statement as well and legally the university had to provide a separate building for african americans. The new building was a house just north of austin texas. it was named the School of Law of the Texas State University for Negroes. -
Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson becomes the first african american to play professional baseball, by doing this he shattered the color barrier for professional sports. being an icon for young african americans across the country and inspiring them to perform to their full otential. -

president truman ended segration in the military. -
Brown v. Board of education
This case made it unconstitutional for segregation in schools. this case made any descimination against race illegal. this was a huge break through in the search for racial equality.
