    Democritus

He was born in 460 BC and died on 370BC at age 90. He made up his own theory of the atom. He discovered that everything is composed of a certain thing, which are invisible and cannot be destroyed. It gave us an idea of that there is atoms present in everything in the atmosphere.

    Scientists of the Atom

  • Antoine Lavoisier

Antoine was born on 26th August 1743 in Paris, France. He died at the age of 50 on the 8th of May 1794. He was the man who first started the research on modern chemistry and the things we know about atoms today. He discovered the first few elements and he showed that chemical elements were not created or destroyed; they just combined to make different things He showed us the conservation of mass.
  • Joseph Proust

He was born on September 26 1754 and died on July 5, 1826 at age 71. He made his own Law of Definite Proportions by himself only. It means that all elements have the same components such as H20 2 parts Hydrogen and 1 part oxygen for all water wherever you find it. It showed us that all elements have a certain components that make up that certain element..
  • John Dalton

Dalton was born in 1766 and died at the age of 77 in 1843. Dalton expanded ideas off of Lavoisier and Proust’s works. He discovered matter couldn’t be broken down into anything smaller he called these atoms. He showed us these five points: Elements are made of atoms. Atoms have different sizes and masses. They cannot be created or destroyed. They form chemical compunds. In a reaction they are combined, separated or rearranged
  • Amedeo Avogadro

He was born on 9 August 1776 and died on 9 July 1856 at age 79. He worked off of Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac’s work.He showed that the greater the amount of gas the greater the volume would get. It showed that if the circumstances were the same with the gas then the atoms would be the same. It showed us that the same conditions could make the molecules turn the same.
  • Dmitri Mendeleev

He was born on 8 February 1834 and died on 2 February 1907. He worked off many other scientists’ ideas, but he was the main scientist to work on it. He is noted for by making the periodic table of the elements, it organised all the elements and their properties into a table. He changed our views by showing all the elements organised and sorted.
  • Niels Bohr

He was born on 7 October 1885 and died on 18 November 1962. He worked off of Thomson and Rutherford’s work to create his own model. He discovered that the atoms travelled in orbits around the nucleus and the properties being determined by the orbiting electrons. It changed it by showing us that atom properties can be shown by the number of electrons orbiting the nucleus.
  • Joseph John Thomson

He was born on 18 December 1856 and died on August 30 1940. He worked off of William Proust and Norman Lockyers theories of the smallest size of atom. He discovered that there were electrons inside the atom that were 1000 times smaller than the atom itself. This proved that the atom had even smaller components. It showed that the atom wasn’t the smallest thing possible and that there were charges inside the atom itself.
  • Marie Curie

She was born on 7 November 1867 and died on 4 July 1934 aged 66. She studied off Henri Becquerel’s work. She proved Dalton’s theory wrong by proving atoms were divisible. She proved Dalton’s theory wrong.
  • Robert Millikan

He was born on March 22 1868 and died on December 19, 1953 at age 85. He worked off of J.J. Thomson’s discoveries. He discovered charges on electrons. It showed us that electrons can carry charges.
  • Ernest Rutherford

Rutherford was born on 30 August 1871 and died on 19 October 1937. He worked off Thomson’s gold foil experiment, which discovered the atom had a tiny heavy nucleus. He proved that electrons move around the nucleus. It deepened our knowledge of where the electrons are located and act.
  • Fredrick Soddy

He was born on 2 September 1877 and died on 22 September 1956. He worked off Ernest Rutherford’s work by working in collaboration with him. He discovered isotopes, which are basically just variants of an element because of the weight differences. It shows that in some rare cases the weight of certain atoms can change.
  • Hans Geiger

He was born on 30 September 1882 and died on 24 September 1945. He worked with Ernest Rutherford who influenced his work.He helped Rutherford make his nuclear theory of the atom. The experiment showed that some electrons were deflected, which means it, had a positive charge. It showed that the nucleus was very small inside an atom.
  • James Chadwick

He was born on 20 October 1891 and died on 24 July 1974 at 82 years old. He worked off Ettore Majorana’s prediction. He discovered that in the nucleus there was another particle called the neutron. It shows that there were uncharged particles inside the nucleus of all atoms.
