  • The Battle of Gonzales

    The Battle of Gonzales marked the start of the Texas Revolution. When Santa Anna ordered the Texans at Gonzales be disarmed, a small dispute between the Texans and Mexicans led to one of the most significant events in Texas history - the Texas Revolution.

    Texas Revolution

    "Between October 1836 and April 1836, a group of mostly American-born residents of the Mexican province of Texas rebelled against the government of Mexico and ultimately declared Texas to be an independent republic" (Gibson, 2016).
  • Sam Houston Elected 1st President

    Sam Houston was elected the first president of the Republic of Texas. Mirabeau B. Lamar was elected to be his vice president. Sam Houston served his first presidency term from 1836 to 1838. During this time period, Texas was still trying to gain independence from Mexico, whom refused to accept their independence.

    The Battle of the Alamo

    The Battle of the Alamo was a 13-day siege that began on February 23, 1836 and ended both tragically and heroically on March 6, 1836 when Santa Anna ordered his final assault on the Alamo. As many of the eyewitnesses from the battle recalled, the bodies of the fallen American soldiers were burned.

    "Similar to the U.S. Constitution, it describes the responsibilities of government, lists grievances of the people, and declares Texas an independent republic" (Texas Independence, n.d.).

    During this time period, Texas was self-governing. Many significant events took place during this time period.
  • Sam Houston - Commander in chief of the Texas army

    During the Convention of 1836, Sam Houston was named Commander in chief of the Texas army. (Campbell, p. 133).
  • The Goliad Massacre

    The Goliad Massacre happened shortly after the Battle of the Alamo and was just as tragic. The Goliad Massacre resulted in the execution of James Fannin and his troops, as ordered by Santa Anna. According to Dr. J. H. Barnard's journal, whom survived the event, only about a dozen Texans were spared.
  • Battle of San Jacinto

    The Battle of San Jacinto was another significant battle during the Texas Revolution. in this battle, Sam Houston and his troops planned a surprise attack on General Santa Anna and the Mexican army. The Texans defeated the Mexicans and captured Santa Anna.
  • Treaty of Velasco

    The Treaty of Velasco was an agreement between ad interim president David Burnett and Santa Anna that consisted of 2 treaties. The public treaty consisted of 10 articles and called for "an end to hostilities between the Mexicans and Texans and orders the Mexican troops to leave Texas" (Texas Independence, n.d.). The second, granted Santa Anna freedom on the condition that he "use his influence to secure Mexican recognition of Texas independence" (Texas State Library & Archives Commision, 2019).
  • Capitol relocated to Houston

    The capitol for the Republic of Texas was relocated to Houston.
  • United States Recognized Texas' Independence

    According to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, this recognizing the Republic of Texas was the last act under Jackson's presidency.

    Mirabeau B. Lamar's Presidency Term

    Lamar served as president from 1838 to 1841. During his presidency term, "Lamar initiated an aggressive rather than diplomatic approach to Texas Indians, particularly the Cherokee" (Chapter 7 PowerPoint). During his term, Lamar expelled the Cherokee Indians and pursued Indian removal.
