    Germany, Itlay, and Japan signed a mutal defense treaty, The Tripartite Pact.This was meant to keep the US out of the war, if the US attack one member of the Axis Power then the Us will have to fight all of the members which would cause a 2- front war.

    The United States presidential election of 1940 was fought in the shadow of World War II (in Europe) as the United States was emerging from the Great Depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), a Democrat, broke with tradition and ran for a third term, which became a major issue. The surprise Republican candidate was businessman Wendell Willkie, who crusaded against Roosevelt's perceived failure to end the Depression and his supposed eagerness for war.

    -Hitler broke the agreement he had made in with Stalin and invaded the Soviet Union. -Roosevelt began sending lend-lease supplies to the Soviet Union.

  • German U-Boats Strike

    -When a German submarine fired on the U.S. destroyer Greer, roosevelt ordered navy to fight back. -germans kept sinking our ships -declaration of a full-scale war seemed inevitable
  • FDR Declared War

    The Us military had broken Japan's secret communication codes and learned that Japan was preparing to strike which made the prime minister of Japan, Hideki Tojo to order Japans navy to prepare to attack on the United States. On Dec 6, 1941, Roosevelt received a decoded msg that said Japan's peace reject any American peace proposal. The next morning over 180 Japan warplanes launched from sex aircraft.
