PLATO System
This was developed at the University of Illinois and was a generalized computer-assisted instruction system. It had early forms of social media with notes, PLATO's message forum, TERM-talk, instant messaging, and was the first online chat room. By the 1970s, it had several thousand terminals worldwide and offered coursework from elementary through university.

First Smartphone
IBM unveiled the first smartphone. It was then released in 1994 and it was called the Simon Personal Communicator, it had a touch screen and the ability to send and receive emails and faxes. Two years later it hit the market and the price was $1,100 each. After 6 months, over 50,000 smartphones were sold.

SixDegrees was one of the first social media sites that you could set up a profile, list of connections, and send messages. It was bought out for $125 million, and stopped in 2000, but made a comeback.

This site invited people to submit photos so other people can rate their attractiveness. There is a rumor that it influenced the creators of Facebook and caused a lot of insecurities. It was sold off a few times and the owners tried to turn it into a game in 2014.

Myspace is an online social networking site, where its users can create and post content such as photos, share music/interests, and blog. It was also the largest social networking site in the world from 2005-2008. t has been purchased and sold numerous times by several different companies.

Snapchat is a messaging app that allows its users to send photos, or snaps, to friends and followers but only for a short duration. You can also post your story, which allows your friends to see a photo for 24 hours. You may also message someone directly on this app to talk to them.

This was a social networking site that people made 6 or 7 second long videos on. These videos could also be shared on Facebook and Twitter. In 2015, Vine came out with Vine Kids, which was an app for kids ages 7 to 12 only. Vine shut down in 2016 for various reasons such as failure to meet market needs and competition.

This is a Facebook alternative that you can use to live-stream video, and anyone can make comments, not just with friends.

You join a server and each server is set up with various text chats (general, memes, random, links, etc) and the same thing for voice chats. Parler is a social media platform similar to Twitter that exploded in popularity in December 2020 and early January 2021. Parler is supposed to be the free speech and unbiased version of Twitter but has come under heavy scrutiny for its member's role in the DC protests on January 6th, 2021. Since then Parler has lost its server support and has basically been shut down.
