Origins of the Cold War

  • Capitalism

    an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations, especially as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth.
    The United States are capitalists.
    It was important because it explained what the U.S. was about.
  • Communism

    a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.
    The Soviet Union were communists.
    It was important because it explained how the USSR ran things in their country.
  • United Nations

    Created to replace the League of Nations. It was to keep international peace and based from Wilson's 14 points and the Atlantic Charter. It was created by USSR.
  • Superpowers

    an extremely powerful nation, especially one capable of influencing international events and the acts and policies of less powerful nations.
    The USSR and the US were involved in the superpowers. The US was strong, economic, military and had little damage from the war. The USSR had the largest military in the world.
  • Nuremberg Trials

    This was meant for members of the Nazi Party who were responsible for the Holocaust. It excused Hitler & said they were only following orders, Most were hanged or sent to prison.
  • Yalta Conference

    The Yalta Conference was a meeting between FDR, Stalin, and Churchill to discuss how they were going to defeat Germany and post war peace agreement.
    They decided Germany would be divided into 4 nations. US, USSR, Great Britain, & France.
  • Potsdam Conference

    Great Britain, France, US, & USSR met to finish the final peace settlement. USSR wanted Germany to pay for war but the US didn't want to blame Germany because US needed western & eastern Europe for new markets.
