  • The invention Piezoelectric quartz Electrometer

    The invention Piezoelectric quartz Electrometer
Pierre Curie his brother Jacques invented the piezoelectric quartz electrometer, or as it is called today, a balance. It alows you to mesure small amounts of electirc currents. This invention has become very useful for many electrical researchers and was also useful in Marie Curie's studies on radioactivity.
  • Henri Becquerel

    Henri Becquerel
He discovered that uranium salts emitted rays that resembled X-rays. He showed that radition arose spontaneously from uranium and did not need an external source of energy.
  • Technique to isolate Pitchblende

    Technique to isolate Pitchblende
Pitchblende is a very complex mineral. It is made up of at least 30 elements. The curies used a new method of chemical analysis that sepearated the different substances in Pitchblende. They did this by putting the substance in acid that might disolve a certain element leaving which they could pour off leaving other elements behind in a slughe.
  • Discovery of Polonium

    Discovery of Polonium
Using the tecqnique of chemical analysis the curies made reapeted separations of the substances in Pitchblende then used the Curie Electrometer to identify the most radioactive fractions. They discovered a fraction that was acted like the other fractions but was more radioactive so it had to be a new element. They named it "polinium".
  • Discovery of radium

    Discovery of radium
Marie Curie obtained radium from pitchblende after noticing that unrefined pitchblende was more radioactive than the uranium that was separated from it. She reasoned that pitchblende must contain at least one other radioactive element. Curie needed to refine several tons of pitchblende in order to obtain tiny amounts of radium.
  • Theory of radioactivity

    Theory of radioactivity
Is when the number of nuclei of a radioactive sample keep on decreasing exponentially with time.
  • Nobel Prize in Physics

    Nobel Prize in Physics
In 1903 the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Pierre Curie, Marie Curie and Henri Becquerel the Nobel Prize in Physics, "in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel."
  • Isolation of Radium metal

    Isolation of Radium metal
From a ton of pitchblende, one-tenth of a gram of radium chloride was separated in 1902 using chemical analysis. In 1906 Marie Curie had isolated the pure radium metal
  • Nobel Prize in Chemistry

    Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Marie Curie was awarded the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, "in recognition of her services to the advancement of chemistry by the discovery of the elements radium and polonium, by the isolation of radium and the study of the nature and compounds of this remarkable element."
  • Radium treating cancer

    Radium treating cancer
Marie Curie directed the worlds first studies on the treatment of neoplasms,or cancer, using radioactive isotopes. She discovered that radioactive isotopes can be used to control the growth of cells in tumors.
