Niels Bohr and the Atomic Model

  • Niels Bohr Born

    Niels Bohr Born
Niels Bohr was born on 7 October 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was the second of three children.

    Started Undergraduate at Copenhagen University
Niels Bohr started as an undergraduate student at Copenhagen University, he chose to study physics.
  • Traveled to England

Niels Bohr decided to travel to England in September of 1911. It was supported by a fellowship, this trip helped him gain more knowledge on the atom. A majority of the work on the atom was being accomplished in England at that time. There he met Ernest Rutherford, the man that was able to pass an atom through a thin sheet of gold foil making them realize there is a positive charge to the atom. However Rutherfords model was flawed because it did not show how the electrons moved.
  • Bohr beings teaching

Niels Bohr decided to start teaching at the University of Copenhagen. He also started to study the atom more in-depth. Please see the educational link below.

    Bohr edited the Atomic Model
Niles Bohr edited Rutherfords model of the atom. Bohr also utilized Max Plancks quantum theory to get a better understanding of the atom. He realized that electrons move around the positively charged atom and they move in a planetary motion. Another word meaning that the electrons moved around the nucleus. He also realized that electrons could jump to different orbits due to differing energy and that they either had to emit energy or absorb it (part of Plancks quantum theory).
