    The first women's college and the oldest African-American higher learning institution open their doors. This is important because at the time it was not common for women and African-Americans to get this sort of education.
  • The Thirteenth Amendment is Passed.

    The Thirteenth Amendment is Passed.
    In 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment is passed which makes all slavery illegal. This gave more rights to African Americans.
  • Alvarez vs. the Board of Trustees of the Lemon Grove (California) School District

    Alvarez vs. the Board of Trustees of the Lemon Grove (California) School District
    This was the first successful school desegregation court case. It forbade the school district from putting Mexican-American in a separate school.

    A combination of five different cases, this court case outlawed separate educational facilities for different races.

    LBJ signs Immigration Act that allowed for more Latin and Asian immigrants to enter the United States. This allowed our classrooms to become more diverse.

    This act allowed funding for educational programs aimed to help students whose first language was not English. This act was later replaced with the No Child Left Behind Act.

    This act allows schools to focus on the specific needs and services of American Indian students.

    In 1973, the Rehabilitation Act is signed. This act guarantees civil rights for those with disabilities making it easier for those with disabilities to attend public school for free.
