  • Theory of Knowledge and Metaphysics

    Theory of Knowledge and Metaphysics
Moritz Schlick in his autobiography said, "Despite his love for Philosophy, he believed that only mathematical physics could help him obtain actual and exact knowledge"(Wendal). He distrusted any metaphysical speculation. He denied the possibility in metaphysics, thus introducing the general theory of knowledge.
  • Defining Law

Schlick defines law in practice is understood as a rule by which the state prescribes certain behavior to its people. These rules often contradict the natural desires of the citizens (for if they did not do so, there would be no reason for making them) and are in fact not followed by many of them; while others obey, but under compulsion. The state does in fact compel its citizens by imposing certain punishments that serve to bring their desires into harmony with the prescribed laws. (Moritz)
  • Freedom of Will

"Freedom of the will" generally proceeds in such fashion that its advocates attempt to refute, and its opponents to prove, the validity of the causal principle, both using hackneyed arguments, and neither in the least abashed by the magnitude of the undertaking. (I can exclude only Bergson from this criticism, with whom, however, this whole question is not an ethical but a metaphysical problem. Others distinguish two realms, one of which determinism holds, but not in the other. (Moritz Schlick)
