Theme Statement
When put against a tough problem, focus on rewards for solving it. -
Meeting Anja
SUMMARY: Vladek first met Anja when his cousin brought her when visiting Vladek. Soon enough, every day they called each other and they got married later on. TYPE OF EVENT: This changed his outlook on his life and was positive as it helped him strive to survive Auschwitz. HOW THEME CONNECTS: By thinking of Anja, Vladek was able to have a reason of surviving the camps in order to get back to her. -
Becoming a prisoner of war
SUMMARY: Vladek got recruited by the army in order to go to war. In the trenches, Nazi Germany caught up to him and took him in as a prisoner. TYPE OF EVENT: This is the time he realizes that the war is a full fledged war. He gets to know how to feel as a prisoner for the first time. RELATION: It relates to the theme because he was put in a tough problem and needs to solve it. -
Reunited with his family
SUMMARY: After getting released by the red cross, Vladek acted polish and arrived on a train which took him to Sosnowiec. Type of Event: Vladek got reunited which made him appreciate his family more and how they needed to be more cautious of their actions. How it relates to theme: Vladek didn't lose hope of being reunited with Richieu(His son) and Anja even though he was thousands of miles away at one point. -
Getting captured the second time
SUMMARY: After hiding for 3 years, Anja and Vladek got captured by Nazi's and were sent to Auschwitz. TYPE OF EVENT: This was the second time Vladek was sent to a camp, but Anja was there too so he had to survive.(Negative) HOW IT RELATES: This was Vladek's hardest problem throughout this war so he needs to find a way to survive and get back to Anja. -
Being in the camps
SUMMARY: During the camps, Vladek survived by doing special task like being a shoe maker and running errands for the guards. TYPE OF EVENT: This was good for Vladek as he learned life skills and was doing his best to survive. HOW IT RELATES TO THEME: Vladek would do so much in order to survive, like getting the guards to like him and knowing that his efforts would hopefully reunite him with Anja as she was still alive during all his time as well. -
Liberation
SUMMARY: After being in the camp for a year, the Americans finally came to liberate them from the swiss border. After being free he was in contact with the Jewish Organization and reunited with her
TYPE OF EVENT: This was good for him as he learned to be positive and hardworking to solve his problem.
RELATES TO THEME: After being separated from Anja, he dreamed about being with her and having a good life, by being crafty and smart, he would finally be rewarded with Anja.
