The common schools movement was a movement led by Horace Mann who elected into the US house of representatives in 1848. A common school was a school in the early 1800's that was funded by public dollars and served individuals 6 to 18 years old of all social classes, religions and races. -
The New York State Asylum for Idiots opens
The New York State Asylum for Idiots opened in 1851 which was a school opened for mentally handicapped children and adults. Although the name of the school sounds very offensive the work idiot was a common medical term back then. The school went through various name changes until it was closed and torn down in the 1970's -

The department of education was established in 1867 in order to collect data and information from schools across the country to help create a better education system for the United States

First School for the Deaf opens
The Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was the first school opened for people with difficulties hearing. This is very important for the history of education because it shows that more opportunities for everybody to have a right to education was opening up.

Plessy vs Ferguson is a supreme court case in 1896 that decided racial segregation was constitutional as long as facilities are equal. This opened up opportunities for segregation in educational facilities. -

The Association of American Universities was founded in 1900 in order to hold the universities in America to higher standers. It now is a group of the top 65 leading research universities.

Elementary and Secondary Education Act
The elementary and secondary education act was the start of the head start movement by the ESEA. The head start act was the act that allowed for more lunches and other needs to be provided for families in poverty. This allowed those students in poverty to continue their education -
Titel IX
Title IX is the law passed in 1972 that ended segregation because of sex in public education. -
No Student Left Behind act
This act established new test standards for students. If schools are not able to reach these standards they may face federal aid money. Because of these new standards many teachers teach for these tests only.
