    • Would not break until a written constitution was formed
    • Cause: the third estate being locked out of the estates general
    • Effect: the national assembly was formed which wrote the Declaration of the rights of the man and citizen

    • The national assembly gave the third estate better representation
    • eventually would be replaced by the Legislation assembly on 30th September 1791
    • the first and second estate joined the national assembly to help form a better government
    • cause: the third estate being lock out of the estates general
    • effect: helped a new government be formed
    • effect: wrote the deceleration of rights of man and citizen

    • 14th July 1789
    • The third estate believed the King and nobility wished to disband them
    • French troops surrounded Paris
    • Parisian Rabble seized the Bastille to help arm peasants
    • Poor peasants over through their lords and destroyed feudal documents
    • Cause: wealth elite trying to keep the peasants in check for too long
    • Effect: end to the feudal system in France
    • Effect: Introduced the Declaration of the rights of the man and the citizen
  • The storming of the Bastille

    The storming of the Bastille
    • 14th July 1789
    • Bastille was a national armory and political prison in Paris France
    • it was stormed at the beginning of the French revolution
    • cause: French revolutionaries march to Bastille to ask for the governor of Bastille to release the arms and munitions, when the governor refused the revolutionaries stormed Bastille
    • effect: armed the revolutionaries of the French revolution, also Bastille was destroyed by the order of the revolutionary government.

    • 26th August 1789
    • guaranteed equal rights for all men
    • stopped against unreasonable arrests
    • freedom of speech
    • freedom of religion
    • anyone could hold a public office
    • caused by the tyrannic rule of the previous King
    • caused by the 3rd estate being locked out of the estates general
    • effect: the citizens to push for more equal rights than before
    • effect: The declaration of the rights of women and the female citizen.
  • The Women’s March on Versailles

    • 4th October 1789
    • Crowds of Women marched to Versailles demanding bread for their families
    • King Louis promised to distribute all the bread to the women
    • The national guard showed up causing the women to storm Versailles
    • Maria Antoinette barely escaped
    • Cause: food shortage in France and the royal family hording to much
    • Effect: King Louis would never see Versailles again

    The Constitution of 1791 sets up a constitutional monarchy in France

    •gave active citizens the right to vote
    •active citizens were 2/3 of the men
    • active citizens payed a sum of taxes
    • set up the declaration of rights of men and the citizen as a preamble to the constitution
    • cause: The middle classes desire for better representation and better voice in the government
    • effect: the constitution was not around for long it only lasted one year but it set a constitutional monarchy and would be used an example for the next French constitution
  • Louis XVI is executed at the guillotine

    Louis XVI is executed at the guillotine
    • 21st January 1792
    • Louis XVI was convicted of treason and sentenced to death
    • Marie Antoinette, his wife was executed nine months later
    • Cause: increased opposition of the king forced King Louis to flee
    • Cause: he was apprehended and arrested
    • Effect: Allowed Napoleon to ascend to power as the Emperor of France
  • The Legislative Assembly declares war on Austria

    The Legislative Assembly declares war on Austria
    • 20th April 1792
    • The other countries of Europe were keeping a close eye on France in fear that the revolutionary ideas of France would spread to their country
    • Did not want to untie against France anyways
    • Cause: The revolutionaries wanted to use war to unite France
    • Effect: French forces did not fare well at the beginning but at the end of the war they got better
  • The Continental System is implemented

    The Continental System is implemented
    the system used by France and its allies to hurt Great Britain • forbid countries from trading with Britain
    • it stimulated French economy a little
    • overall hurt the entire economy of Europe
    • cause: Napoleon's desire to weaken Britain in hopes of eventually conquering it
    • effect: hurt Europe's economy
    • effect: Russia stopped the blockade hurting the continental system
    • effect: Napoleon invaded Russia in hopes of restarting the blockade
    • effect: Napoleon's empire began to fall
  • Napoleon is defeated in Russia

    • 24th June 1812
    • Russian forces retreated destroying everything in their path to stop the French forces
    • Napoleon lost 300,000 troops
    • Russia lost 200,000 troops
    • Cause: Russia not supporting Napoleon’s continental system
    • Effect: Napoleon was exiled onto Elba
  • Napoleon is defeated at Leipzig (Battle of the Nations)

    Between 185,000 French forces and 320,000 allied forces
    Napoleon was forced into the city of Leipzig to save his communications
    Napoleon was forced to retreat on October 17th
    A nervous corporal blew the bridge that Napoleon’s forces were retreating on early causing 30,000 to be captured
    Total 38,000 French wounded or dead
    Total 55,000 allied wounded or dead
    Cause: Napoleon wanting to reclaim Berlin and the need to salvage communications
    Effect: stopped all French control East of the Rhine
  • Napoleon is exiled to Elba

    • 11th April 1814
    • After Napoleon lost at the battle of Waterloo, he was forced to Abdicate the throne
    • Napoleon eventually escaped Elba before being exiled again to Saint Helena
    • Cause: Napoleon’s lose at Waterloo
    • Effect: Napoleon eventually escaped Elba
    • Effect: Napoleon lost once and for all and was exiled to Saint Helena where he died
  • Spanish nationalists overthrow Napoleon

    • 3rd December 1814
    • This ended the French occupation in Spain
    • Napoleon started to lose grasps on Spain after losing the Peninsular War
    • The wars used more and more French resources then Napoleon had to spare
    • Cause: Napoleon’s loss of the Peninsular War
    • Effect: Napoleon’s empire was completely out of Spain
    • Effect: The French empire shrunk even more than before
  • Napoleon is defeated at Waterloo

    • 18th June 1815
    • 73,000 French forces
    • 118,000 allied forces
    • 41,000 French casualties
    • 24,000 allied casualties
    • The final defeat of Napoleon
    • Cause: Napoleon escaping Elba and wishing to retake his spot as the French Emperor
    • Effect: Napoleon was finally defeated, and he spent the rest of his life on Saint Helena
