  • Proclomation of Neutrality

    Proclomation of Neutrality
    Issued by G.Washington, this document kept the U.S. out of a war it was not ready for, and it set the foundation for future foreign policy. Thoough it caused inside turmoil, the proclomation helped over all.
  • XYZ Affair

    XYZ Affair
    A diplomatic incident that had an American peace delagation in France when three (X, Y, Z) reps. from France wanted a bribe. This was seen as hostile and caused an undeclared naval wareffare aka a "quasi war". It was succesful and was setteled in 1800.
  • Convention of 1800

    Convention of 1800
    This convention ended the quasi war between France and America, and by squashing many of the hostilities between to the two it allowed them to repay each other for the damages and differences. With J. Adams being te president at the time, America's nuetratily was made official.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    This land deal that was made between the U.S. and France for an estimated $15 million, had an initial negative reaction from the prsident and from many cabnet members, however, the purchase helped to double the size of the country. Threrfore making the U.S. stonger both materially and strategically, all of which made the purchase a success in the long run.
  • Embargo Act

    Embargo Act
    The Embargo Act was a law passed to stop ships from trading in foreign ports, this law was signed by T. Jefferson. Not only was this law opposed by Federalists it fell through, it caused a bad economy and increased the rates of smuggling.
  • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    This animosityy filled war lasted for two years and eight months. The reasons behind why it even started were maritime issues, expansionism, politics, and impressment from the British. This war was a challenge for America and in the end Canada won the war, and many of the disputes between the British located near Canada's boarder and the Americans were eliminated as things returened to the status quo.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Treaty of Ghent
    Signed in Ghent, Belgium in December of 1814 by British and American representatives. This treaty which ended the war of 1812, was officially put into effect in May of 1815. It allowed the settleing of boundaries between the U.S. and Canada to be successful.
  • The Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine
    With James Monroe as president, he warns other nations that the U.S, will not be accepting anymore European nations to colonize on American soil. He made it clear the any attempt to do so would be seen as hostility. THe main idea behind the doctrine was to seperate outsider influence on the country, this doctrine lasted for thirty years before it failed.
