Louis Braille Born and Sever Accident
Louis Braille was born in January 1,1809 in Coupvray, France. As soon as he could walk he spent time playing in his father's workshop. At the age of 3, he was toying around with some of the tools, trying to make holes in a piece of leather with an awl. The awl slipped off the leather though, causing it strike him in his eye. The wound soon became infected and spread to his other eye as well, making him completely blind. -
Louis at School
Louis studied at coupvray until the age of 10. Because of his determination and diligence, he was permitted to attend one of the first blind schools in the world, the National Institute for Blind Youth in Paris. This provided Louis a stable learning enviornment. -
Barbiers' writing system
Soon after he joined the National Institiute of Blind Youth he is introduced to Barbier's night writing system. He started to improve which also lead him to his own system. -
Braille System
Braille was determined to create a system of reading and writing that could close the critical gap in communication between the sighted and the blind. Braille's exact words were,"Access to communication in the widest sense is access to knowledge, and that is vitally important for us if we [the blind] are not to go on being despised or patronized by condescending sighted people. We do not need pity, nor do we need to be reminded we are vulnerable. We must be treated as equals – and communication. -
Louis Braille Graduates
At only the age of 17Louis graduates and becomes a student teacher at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth. He was truly an incredible person being able to learn so much and perservere through such difficult moments in his life and still be able to accomplish so much. -
Louis Publishes
Louis publishes the first book describing his system, now known as Braille in honor of him.However, Ironically this book was first printed by using the raised letter method of the Haüy system. -
Louis Braille
Doctors examine Louis and diagnose him with tuberculosis, a lung disease. Again, evevn in tough moments like these, Louis thrived. He still came out with more knowledge and he continued to put his efforts towards helping people. -
Symbols for Math and Music
In 1837, he added symbols for math and music. But since the public was skeptical, blind students had to study braille on their own. Even at the Royal Institution, where Louis taught after he graduated, braille wasn't taught until after his death. -
Invents Rapigraphy
In 1839, Braille published details of a method he had developed for communication with sighted people, using patterns of dots to approximate the shape of printed symbols. Louis was always full of surprises. -
Louis Braille's Death
Just two days after his 43rd birthday, Louis Braille dies of tuberculosis. His body is originally buried in his hometown of Coupvray, but everything except his hands is later moved to the Pantheon, where many of France's greatest heroes lie. Louis' dream of his system being nationally recognized comes true, even though he does not live to see it. -

Louis Braille was so significant because he was a major contributer to the blind people. He invented new concepts and methords for them to use and he made their lives a whole lot easier. Blind people all around the world still use the Braille System today,
The reason we should know about him is because he made very important inventions and helped many people. We should recogninze his efforts and remember his contributions and efforts.
