Lewis and Clark

    Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were born simultaneously in neighboring counties in Virginia on August 1, 1773.

    They both were entranced by the voyages of such famous explorers as Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, and Ferdinand Magellan, and in 1795
  • 1803

    In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery, and named U.S. Army Captain Meriwether Lewis its leader, who selected William Clark as his partner.
  • 1804

    May 14, 1804, and met up with Lewis in Saint Charles, Missouri, a short time later; the corps followed the Missouri River westward.
  • 1804

    On August 20, 1804, Sergeant Charles Floyd died, apparently from acute appendicitis.
  • Injury

    Medical report: the only significant injury took place August 11, 1806 when a half-blind member of our group spotted Lewis and, thinking him to be an Elk, shot him in the leg.
