    King Kamehameha I

    King Kamehameha I was also known as Kamehameha the Great. He was the uniter of all the the Hawaiian islands, and he was both clever and a great warrior. From around the time of 1810 onward, Kamehameha was the single ruler of Hawaii. During his time as king, Hawaii became the center of a profitable sandalwood trade. He ruled until his death in 1819.

    Queen Ka'ahumanu

    Queen Ka'ahumanu was one of Kamehameha the first's many wives, however, she was often considered to be his favorite. After, her husband died in 1819, Ka'ahumanu became regent, or co-ruler, with Kamehameha the first's son, Kamehameha II (Liholiho). While she was in power, Queen Ka'ahumanu was instrumental in the process of ridding the islands of the constricting kapu system, which forbid women from eating or doing certain things at certain times of the year.

    King Kamehameha II

    King Kamehameha II ruled from his father's death in 1819 until his own death five years later in 1824. He was co-ruler of Hawaii with his father's wife Ka'ahumanu. During his reign, the kapu system was abolished. Both Kamehameha II and his wife, Kamamalu, died of measles on a trip to London.

    Queen Kamamalu

    Queen Kamamalu was both the wife and the half-sister of King Kamehameha II. She died of measles in 1824 along with their husband while they were visiting the United Kingdom.

    King Kamehameha III

    King Kamehameha III was the longest reigning king in Hawaiian history, ruling for thirty years. While he ruled, Hawaii was thrown through three different types of governing. First was the regency of Ka'ahumanu, then, autocracy under Kamehameha III after he came into full power, and finally, later, under a constitutional monarchy. During Kamehameha III's reign The Great Mahele, a system of dividing land, was also in use.

    Queen Kalama was the consort of King Kamehameha III. During his reign, the Great Mahele was in place in their country. The Great Mahele was a system for dividing land in Hawaii. Queen Kalama was loved by all of her subjects.

    Princess Ruth (Keanolani)

    Princess Ruth was a High Chiefess of Hawaii. She was very anti-European; she refused to speak English or convert to Christianity. She had the opportunity to to gain the throne, but missed her chance. However, she was not left with nothing. She inherited vast amounts of Kamehameha lands.

    King Kamehameha V

    Kamehameha V was also known as Lot Kamehameha. He became king in 1863 after his brother, the fourth, died. During his reign, he instituted a new constitution that was stricter than the previous, and had to deal with the problem of annexation. He died as a bachelor, without any heirs to succeed him.

    Queen Kapi'olani

    Queen Kapi'olani was the consort of King Kalakaua. During her husband's time as ruler, Kapi'olani was his personal representative for state matters in England. She also was responsible for beginning the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children, a maternity home meant to help preserve the Hawaiian race.

    King Kamehameha IV

    During King Kamehameha the fourth's reign, the Anglican church was introduced to Hawaii. He and his wife were also responsible for opening The Queen's Hospital to look after the health of their subjects. King Kamehameha IV had only one son, who died when he was four. The king died not long after, leaving Hawaii without and heir to inherit the throne.

    Queen Emma

    Queen Emma was the consort of King Kamehameha IV. During her husband's reign, she helped with the implementation of The Queen's Hospital for their subjects as well as bringing the Anglican church to Hawaii. Much later, after her husband's death and the death of the following king, Queen Emma made a bid for the throne, however she lost it to David Kalakaua.

    King Kalakaua

    King David Kalakua made two bids for the throne of Hawaii, and in his second, he was successful. After the death of King Lunalilo in 1874, Kalakaua was elected king. During his reign as king, Kalakaua was forced to accept a new constitution that put limits on his power over Hawaii.

    Queen Lili'oukalani

    Queen Lili'oukalani was the last queen of Hawaii. She was named heir when her brother David Kalakaua became king. When her brother died, Lili'oukalani became queen. It was during her reign that the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893 and the queen herself was deposed.

    Princess Likelike

    Princess Likelike was the sister of Queen Lili'oukalani and King Kalakaua and the mother of the crown princess Ka'iulani. At the age of 37, she died mysteriously without ever becoming Queen.
