  • Baba was born

    "In 1933...Baba was born," (24), and "Zahir Shah began his forty-year regn of Afghanistan" (24).
  • Hassan is born

    "Hassan was born in the winter of 1964," (6), the same day his mother left him. He was left without a mother. Ali had to take care of him.
  • Hassan got surgery

    "Dr. Kumar is a plastic surgeon," (45) was what Baba said when Hassan got his lip surgery. This was a present from Baba to Hassan on his birthday. Hassan was uncomfortable with the fact that they did this.
  • Amir wins the kite contest

    "Bravo! Bravo, Amir, agha!", (66), was what Baba told Amir when he won the kite contest. Amir was so excited to finally get his dad's respect. Amir let Hassan fly the kite aftwerwards.
  • Hassan got raped

    Assef said, "It's just a Hazara," (75), and that was the excuse for violating Hassan. Amir was watching in silence. This left him guilty for a long time.
  • Amir's 13th birthday

    "My birthday bash was a huge success," (94), was Amir's response to his thirteenth birthday. Baba always threw him a big party. This was the last birthday that Amir and Hassan shared together.
  • Soviet Union Invaded

    "Afghanistan was known as not having a lot of peace since 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded." (1)
  • Amir speaks to Soraya for the first time

    Amir speaks to Soraya for the first time without her father present at the flea market. Soraya and Amir small talk about Amir and him writing. "Would you like to read one of my stories?" (147) "I would like that" (147) Amir knew he shouldn't be speaking to her but he goes over to their booth anyway.
  • Baba finds out he as cancer

    After Baba goes to the doctor, he finds out that he has cancer. "Oat Cell Carcinoma." (156) There is no cure for his cancer but the doctor suggests that Baba could always do chemotherapy. Baba refuses to get it.
  • Soviet Troops Left

    "The Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989, because a unilateral withdrawal." (2)
  • Amir Trying to have a baby

    Soraya and Amir have been trying to have a baby. They been trying to have a baby since 1989 but by 1991 they were not sucessful. Soraya decides to tell her parents. "God knows best, bachem. Maybe it wasn't meant to be." (186) these are the words that Soraya's mother said to try and comfort her.
  • Afghanistan Descended into Vicious Strife

    "After the Soviet's departed, Afghanistan descended into vicious internecine strife, by the summer if 1994." (2)
  • Mullah Omar's men, funneling money

    "As early as 1994, Pakistani intelligence officers began funneling arms, money and supplies to Mullah Omar's men." (3)
  • Mullah Omar rolling up the Warlords

    "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east." (2)
  • Taken Control

    "Buoyed by Pakistani aid, the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan." (3)
  • Amir found out about Hassan

    Amir found out that his father is also a father to Hassan. "I'm thirty-eight years old and I've just found out my whole life is on big fucking lie!" (223) This is a significant because Amir knows what he meant by "there is a way to be good again" (192)
  • Amir goes to Pakistan

    All of Amir's past has kept him awake the night before the flight. "I rested my head against the window. Waited, in vain, for sleep." (194)
  • Amir gets a call from Rahim

    Amir gets a phone call from Rahim Khan who says that he wants Amir to go to Pakistan to see him. "Rahim Khan is very sick." (191) Amir esaid to Soraya that he needs to go but does not know how long he will be.
  • Hassan next to the Pomegranate Tree

    "The droughts have dried the hill and the tree hasn't borne fruit in years, but Sohrab and I still sit under its shade and I read to him from the Shahnamah" (217) Although the landscape has changed in Kabul, the memories of a childhood have not been forgotten.
  • Bush's Ultimatum

    "President George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. Laden. When it refused, the US joined forces with rebel groups that had never accepted Taliban rule." #

    Hamid Karzai was elected to a five-year term as president in 2004.
