Key Events of Revolutionary War (1775-1783)

  • Olive Branch Petition

    This was the final attempt of the colonies to avoid war with the British in the Revolutionary War. It asserted the colonies loyalty to the crown and asserted their right as Citizens.
  • Second Continental congress

    Congress that brought 12 of the 13 colonies together in order to prepare for war against Britian. They created the continental army. They focused on fighting for independence and organising a government to direct the colonies.
  • Lexington and concord

    First Battle of the Revolutionary War after tensions had been building for years between the colonies and Great Britain. The battle sparked the war and many battles followed, eventually leading to the colonies independence.
  • Bunker Hill

    Early battle in the war. British defeated colonist and the colonist suffered but it only boosted their motivation and made Britain realize that this war was going to be long and costly.
  • France

    Their involvement began in 1775 when they began supplying ships to the Continental Army. French help colonist because French were enemies with Britain. The treaty of energy and commerce recognized United States as an independent nation and encourage train between France and America. The treaty of alliance provided military alliance against Great Britain. I recognize the independence of the United States be recognized as a condition for peace.
  • John Locke

    Gave the ideas of "natural rights" and individualism, along with the ideas of Locke's social contract were placed in the Declaration of Independence, which declared the colonist independence at the end of the war. John Locke was an english philosopher.
  • Thomas Jefferson

    Thomas Jefferson was the main author, along with the second continental congress wrote the declaration of independence.
  • The Declaration of Independence

    First Formal statement of colonies asserting their right to choose government and the right to have independence.
  • Trenton

    The battle of Trenton was a daring assault on the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey.It was led by Washington after being pushed south by the British. The Hessians were forced to surrender after 22 were killed, 92 winded, 918 captured, and 400 escaped. The Americans suffer to dance because they froze and five because they were wounded. After the battle Washington realized that they couldn’t hold back the British reinforcements and it led to the battle at Princeton.
  • Princeton

    They marched to Princeton, the fight wasn’t looking too good for the Americans, then they rallied and broke three dividing lines. They reasserted American control and a lot of New Jersey and improved morale and unity of the colonial army and militas.
  • Valley forge

    This was a six month encampment of General Washington’s Continental Army. Conditions they were cold and harsh and I ran short on supplies. Despite this it was a turning point in the war because Washington proved his mettle and transform the army by uniting them and turning them into a force that could be the British.
  • Saratoga

    Two battles fought in 18 days. The first was a British victory by General John Burgoyne, but when he attacked the second time he was defeated and forced to retreat. American victory convinced the French government to recognize the colonist calls and into the war as their ally.
  • Spain

    Spain declared war on Great Britain in 1779. This created a de facto alliance with the Americans because they were going against the same country. King Charles the third would not consent to a treaty with the United States. This caused British resources to be spread even thinner than before because now they were in war with more people.
  • Cowpens

    The battle of Cowpens was in South Carolina. Americans inflicted heavy casualties on the British. The battle was a turning point in the wars southern campaign. More than 800 British troops for killed, winded or captured. This proves that Americans could outside British without any other factors.
  • Yorktown

    American force of colonial and French troops laid siege to the British army at Yorktown. Captured two British defenses which caused them to surrender. Yorktown was the final battle of the American Revolution and shortly after it British began peace negotiations.
  • Treaty of Paris 1783

    Formally ended the American revolutionary war. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay negotiated a treaty with Great Britain. British crown formally recognize American independence and gave its colonies over to the United States. It doubled the size of the United States and it paved the way for westward expansion.
