  • Wilmot Proviso

    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Henry Clay made this compromise to help and to settle the California Problems. There were two reasons. One reason was to please the North, California would be admitted as a free state, and the slave trade would be abolished. This reason was to please the South, Congress would not pass laws regarding slavery for the rest of the territories won from Mexico, and Congress would pass a stronger law to help slavery or recapture runaway slaves.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    Senetor Stephen A.Douglas drafted a bill to organize territorial governments for the Nebraska territory. He proposed that it be divided into two territories. If this bill passed it would get rid of the Missouri Compromise. The bill passed. People realized the act would turn Kansas into a battle ground over slavery
  • Bleeding Kansas

    To avenge the sack of Lawrence, John Brown an extreme abolitionist went to the cabins and had murdered 5 people. As the news began to spread, civil war broke out in Kansas. The territory was called "Bleeding Kansas" and lasted for three years.
  • Canning of Sumner

    Sumner delivered a speech attacking the proslavery forces in Kansas. He insulted many people. Sumner was being beaten by Brooks to defend Butler. Southerners cheered while Northerners were shocked by the violence.
  • Dred Scott vs Senford

    Scott was a slave who was fighting for his freedom of becoming a regular citizen. However, when he was fighting for his justice they said slaves dont have rights and cannot be citizens or free. Therefore, a result of staying as a captured slave.
  • Attack of Harpers Ferry

    Brown planned to capture the weapons in the U.S arsenal at Harpers Ferry
  • Election of 1860

    Turned into two different races for the presidency. Lincoln won with only 40% of the votes.
