    Born October 7, 1885 and died November 18, 1962. Niels Bohr was from Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • The Models

    We start off with the atom. The fundamental building block of matter. The model and our understanding of the atom has been greatly disputed over the course of physics. We first start off with the Plum Pudding model. This model shows that a positively charged proton contained negatively charged electrons that were stuck in it. We later moved on to the Rutherford Model.
  • The Bohr Model

    The Rutherford Model had a proton or proton cluster at the center of the atom with electrons randomly orbiting the nucleus. As we come to the Bohr model, we notice that not much has changed in terms of how the atom looked, but how we understood electrons to behave was greatly changed. As opposed to the Rutherford Model, Bohr discovered that electrons don’t move around randomly but rather have different energy levels based on the atom in question. This led to understanding electromagnetism.
  • Philosophical Contribution

    Today's Electron Cloud Model is still based off of Rutherford's and Bohr's atom models. The Plum Pudding, Rutherford, and Bohr model was part of a lengthy paradigm shift that lasted started in 1907 with the Pudding Model and continued in 1913 with Bohr Model and continued until the Electron Cloud Model.
  • Philosophical Contribution 2

    Our understanding of atoms previous to this string of discovery was more of a solid building block and although we did have the periodic table for many years before, this discovery led to more discoveries with the periodic table and later in Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics. The Bohr model was also later proven in 1923 and an element was named after his birthplace. Hafnium means 'Copenhagen' in Latin.
