John Proctor's Hardships

  • John Visits Betty

John Proctor goes to see Betty, Abigail's cousin, and gets into a heated argument with Abigail about their affair. Proctor tells her it's over but she refuses to believe he has no feelings for her.
  • John and Elizabeth Talk

Elizabeth tells John that Mary went to court for the witch trials. John then tells Elizabeth tha Abigail told him they were just dancing and it had nothing to do with witch craft. Elizabeth wants him to make it known to everyone that she is lying but he tells her he can't because they were alone when she told him that and no one would believe him. Upon hearing they were alone together she loses faith in her husband. He is faced with the fact that Elizabeth does not trust him due to his affair
  • Mary Returns from Court

When Mary returns from the trials she tells Elizabeth her name was brought up in court but refuses to tell who brought up her name. Elizabeth is sure it was Abigail trying to get rid of her so she can be with John. Once again his affair is causing problems not only for himself but his wife as well.
  • Elizabeth is Arrested

Cheever comes to the Proctor's to take Elizabeth away. He says Abigail was stabbed with a needle at dinner and said it was Elizabeth who did it. Mary so happened to make Elizabeth a doll in court that day and has a needle sticking in it. Cheever takes that as proof that she is a witch and arrests her. Again John's affair with Abigail and her obsession with him is causing not only him pain but his wife as well.
  • Hale Visits

Hale has to come and question everyone who was mentioned in court. When he arrives at the Proctor's he points out that they do not attend church often and that their youngest son is not baptized. Proctor explains that he does not care for Parris' preaching. Hale then asks him to recite the 10 comandments and he does all of them except the one about adultery. All three of those can be seen as red flags and pointing directly to witch craft.
  • John Confesses

John goes to court to tell Danforth the truth about Abigail and the girls. To try to get Danforth to believe him he tells him about his affair and Abigail's extreme jealousy. John states that Elizabeth does not lie and that she will confirm everything he said. But Elizabeth doesn't realize he confessed so she lies to save his secret.
  • John is Arrested

John is trying to get Abigail to confess and she starts screaming that he's the devil and that he's been trying to get her to join his evil ways. Danforth believes her and John is arrested.
  • Elizabeth's Plea

It's now the fall and Hale asks John to confess so he is not hung. He finally decides to confess and Hale and Danforth get paper to write it down and hang it on the church doors. He gets upset after signing it, not wanting it to go on the wall and renounces his confession. Herrick leads the condemned to the gallows where they are hung.
