    During WW1 in 1916, there was a rebellion in Ireland which led to many leaders' execution. In 1920 the British passed the Government of Ireland, which divided Ireland into two separate political entities. And split the country between northern Ireland and Ireland.

    In 1920 the British passed the Government of Ireland Act, which divided Ireland into two separate political entities, each with the power of self-government. The Act was accepted by Ulster Protestants and rejected by southern Catholics, who still demanded total independence for a unified Ireland.

    A period of Civil war began, where 23 southern n counties and 3 counties in Ulster became Ireland. The other Counties of Ulster became Northern Ireland.
