  • The Smiths form

    Arguabley the first indie band were The Smiths, formed in early 1982. The most prominent members were singer Morissey and Guitarist John Maher.
  • The Stone Roses form

    Ian Brown and John Squire form The Stone Roses in 1983, and went on to become one of the prominent acts of the 'Madchester' scene during the late 80's/early 90's.
  • The Smiths (Album)

    The Smiths release their first album (self titled) is released and reaches Number 2 in the UK Charts. The only single from the album is "What Difference Does it Make?".
  • The Smiths appear on TOTP

    The Smiths first appearence on TV was on TOPT> It was significant because Morrissey refused to lip-sync, and instead, took to the stage with a bouqet of flowers instead if a microphone.
  • The Smiths break-up

    The Smiths break-up after the release of their final album "Strangeways, Here We Come". Reasons for the break-up are known to be caused by tension within the band, mainly between Morrissey and Marr.
  • The Stone Roses released

    The Stone Roses release the self-titled debut album, which became a massive hit, reaching its peak in 1990 at number 19 in the Album Charts. Singles from the Album include "She Bangs the Drums" and "I Wanna Be Adored".
  • Blackpool Empress Ballroom '89

    The Stone Roses perform at Blackpools Empress Ballroom to 4,000 people (which was their biggest gig). It was a risk for the band because they moved out of their comfort zone of Manchester to perform in Blackpool.
  • Stone Roses Injunction

    Owners of the Stone Roses contracts took at a legal injunction against the Stone Roses, which prevented them from recording and releasing any material.
  • The Stone Roses split

    The Stone Roses dissolve as a band due to bad performances, mainly due to Brown's lack of vocal ability.
