  • 1954- Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka

    Brown vs. BOE- Initiates separate is not equal, and parents of students with disabilities contend their students were not receiving an adequate education.
  • 1960 Events

    Students with disabilities are still segregated from students without disabilities.
  • 1968 Event

    Students with mild disabilities are beginning to be mainstreamed with students without disabilities, but the students with disabilities are only considered to be "visiting" the general ed class. Full inclusion into the classroom has not happened yet.

    1960 to 2018

  • 1980s events

    Regular Education Initiative- Students with disabilities are not making adequate academic progress, and students with moderate to severe needs are not receiving any types of accomodations in the classroom.
  • Mid 1980s Events

    The inclusion movement within public schools begins.
  • 1986 IDEA

    The reauthorization of IDEA services were extended to infants, toddlers, and preschool children aged 3
  • 504 Rehabilitation Act

    Civil rights law that protects students who don't qualify for services but need accomodations such as extended time and small group testing.
  • 2001- No Child Left Behind Act(NCLB)

    All students are held to high standards and instructed using state standards since they are taking state assessments.
  • 2004- Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004

    Results of IDEA Act of 2004
    -more students are educated within general ed. classes
    -more students with disabilities are employed
    -more students with disabilities are attending collge
    -All students have equal protection under the law
    -IEP documents inform and guide the delivery of instruction
