Russian Sputnik Launches
Russia launched the world's first man made satelite into space. This event caused the United States to pick up the pace in the cold war. -
ARPA Was Created
President Eisenhower of the United States authorized the creation of ARPA, the advanced research projects agency. It is located in the pentagon. -
Man Computer Symbiosis Published
J.C.R. Licklider published a landmark article called "Man Computer Symbiosis" which stated the connection between mankind and the computer. Licklider was also the director of the Information Processing Techniques Office at ARPA. -
Larry Roberts Accepts Job at ARPA
Larry Roberts left MIT and was recruited by ARPA. He also decided that he was going to use the packet switched network technique to organize network traffic. This technique basically breaks down traffic into smaller blocks. Roberts also decided that an Interface Message Proccessor computer would be neccesary for the development of the intergalactic network. -
Development of The IMP Begins
Frank Heart and his skilled team begin to build the Interface Message Proccesor. The team decided to use the Honeywell DDP-516. They were required to build 4 IMP's and the first IMP was due on Labor Day. The IMP would be the equivelant to today's modern day router. -
The First IMP was Delivered to UCLA
Frank heart and his team successfuly built their IMP gateway after months of designing and removing bugs from the software. The IMP was delivered to Len Kleinrock who was specialized in packet switching networks at UCLA. The 3 other IMP's were delivereed to Stanford University, the University of Utah, and the University of California. Universities in the United States played one of the most important roles in developing the internet. -
ARPAnet Tested for First Time
The IMP at the Stanford Research Institute was connected to a SDS-940 mainframe computer. They contacted UCLA and they were going to try to test the connection to ARPAnet for the first time ever. The login was successful for the few letters until they reached the letter "G". -
ALOHAnet connects to ARPAnet
Norm Abraham and his team of specialists developed the world's first wireless packet-switching network. It was named ALOHAnet because it was developed in Hawaii. Larry Roberts gave an IMP to Norm and connected ALOHAnet with ARPAnet. -
First Email Was Sent
Ray Tomlinson was successful at sending himself an email to test ARPAnets abilities. Tom also invented the @ symbol for adressing people in emails. -
TCP/IP is Developed
Vint Cerf realized that ARPAnet was suffering from inefficient handling of traffic, so he developed TCP/IP to replace NCP. It handled traffic much better and was a revolutionary step towards the world wide web. Many of the worlds networks were starting to use TCP/IP, but the International Standards Organization in europe wanted to use OSI. Too many networks in the US were using TCP/IP, so europe decided to go along with the US. -
Alto Computer was Invented
Butler Lampson and Chuck Thacker of PARC developed a computer called Alto. It was meant to be a convenient personal computer. It was a step toward today's laptop or desktop computer. -
Ethernet was Created
Bob Metcalfe's team at PARC developed a local network for their Alto computers. It was like a local internet connection shared by the computers at PARC. -
Novell Netware Software Developed
Drew Major developed the Novell Netware software that was meant for people to access all the files on a network, so that people could easily share data. Most PC's ended up getting Novel's Netware along with their compiters. -
Cisco was created
Cisco was founded by Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner. They basically upgraded the IMP to a more modern router. Their business was very lucritive and it would eventually own over 75% of the worlds router business. -
OS/2 Developed
Microsoft created a powerful operating system that featured a mouse pointer and windows to support IBM's new computers. -
The World Wide Web was Created
Tim Berners-Lee created a system that let people store and request documents over the network. He developed a browser and server for this system. It allowed people to download files. -
IPv6 Created
The Internet Engineering Task Force developed IPv6 to handle faster network speeds. It has handled 96% of the worlds internet traffic up to 2014. -
Gigabit Ethernet is Introduced
Gigabit Ethernet was introduced to the public to implement faster network speeds. -
Wikepedia Was Created
Jimmy Wales creates Wikepedia which is a collection of informational entries. 20,000 entries were posted by the end of the first year. -
Facebook Is Created
Facebook was created Mark Zuckerberg and his associates. Facebook quickly took over the social networking business.
