    First school of Special Education
    The American asylum for the education and instruction of the deaf and dumb. It was opened in Hartford, CT. It provided programs and services for the deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education
    The court decided that school segregation by race was not constitutional. The first time the federal government advocated for students who experienced inequality and prejudice in school.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    initiated the role of the federal government in protecting and providing for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This was so students could have equal access to the public education system.
  • Section 504

    Section 504

  • Foundation for Children with Learning Disabilities

    Foundation for Children with Learning Disabilities
    This organization provided public awareness and funds/grants to support research in learning disabilities. It was founded by Pete and Carrie Rozell.

    Required states to provide sufficient but not the best possible support for the students to benefit from a public education. For them to be at a level about the same as their non-disabled peers.
  • Individuals with Disabilites Education Act (IDEA)

    Individuals with Disabilites Education Act (IDEA)
    Law that makes available a free and appropriate education to eligible children with disabilites. Previously known as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act.
  • Cedar Rapids v Garret F.

    Cedar Rapids v Garret F.
    Court ruled that under IDEA students must be provided with the supplementary services they need to attend school at no extra cost to the parents. This was a huge help to parents considering a lot of them didn't have the financial stability to pay for additional services.

  • Every student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    Every student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
    Provides additional opportunities for schools when students are not making a good enough progress. Focuses on improving educational outcomes for all students. Including students who have traditionally demonstrated low performance in academic areas.
