First School for Visual Disability
Perkins School for the Blind opens in Massachusetts. Originally it was called New English Asylum for The Blind. It becomes the first school for Visual Disabilities. -
AFT and AERA is founded
The American Federation of Teachers is sounded. This same year the American Educational Research Association is founded as well. Both of these represent the furthering of educational research and community. -
Progressive Education Association
The Progressive Education Association is founded. The reformation of the American education is the goal behind this founding. It is a slightly controversial way of educating students. -
Brown V. Board
The Supreme Court determined that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." It was the first historic move towards equality in the educational system. In America that is still being sought for and we continue to adapt and progress towards equality for all.

The Civil Right Act
The Civil Rights Act becomes law. This prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and sex. It all prohibits the discrimination of different religions or nationalities.

The Equal Educational Opportunities Act
This act is passed and prohibits discrimination. It makes schools acknowledge the discrimination within their schools and staff. They must take action to go against the things that prevent equal protection. -
IDEA
IDEA changed terminology from handicap to disability. It mandated transition services. They also added autism and traumatic brain injury to the eligibility list. -
ADA Becomes Law
The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) becomes law. The prohibition of discrimination against those with any type of disability in any area is made a law. this also includes disabilities in education. -
IDEA Gets An Update
Students with Disabilities are to be identified before entering the school system and provided services.Educating students with disibilities with their peers with no disabilities, then raises the standards for those with disabilities and their education. The schools are to be kept accountable in ensuring that they are keeping accountable with the parents. -
No Child Left Behind
The No Child Left Behind Act is passed. Later was signed into Law by G.W Bush on Jan 8th, 2002. The act mainly keeps schools accountable for the information taught to the students and are penalized for the lack of growth in the students.
