  • Sputnik 2

    On this day, USSR launched Sputnik 2 with a small dog named Laika into space. They predicted that Laika was only gonna survive 10 days but instead she only survived 2 days because of the thermal problems.
  • Explorer 1

    Explorer 1 was the first American Satellite to reach orbit, that was launched. This was known as a satelite. This was the first satelite launched by the United States of America. Explorer 1 made an orbit ever 114.8 minutes which is 12.54 orbits per a day. Explorer 1 came back down to Earth on May 23,1958
  • Luna 1

    Luna 1 was lauinched on January 2,1959. This was the first man-made thing to orbit the sun.Luna 1 had a glowing prange gas that was visable over the Indian Ocean. Also with a brightness which had a sixth-magnitude star that allowed astronomers to track the space craft.
  • Luna 2

    Luna 2 was the second space craft launched directly at the moon.Luna 2 had some pretty cool things about it like it was exactly like Luna 1 except they vhanged a few things. Luna 2 impacted the lunar suface. Luna 2 was also the first space craft to land actually on the moon.
  • Last Man to fly alone.

    The last man to fly alone in space was L. Gordon Cooper. He was launched in a Faith 7 capsule. He was launched at Kennedy Space Center. He was the ypungest out of all the Mercury 7 astronauts. He passed away on October 4,2004 that very day that Space Ship One won the X-Prize.
  • First Woman In Space

    The first woman in space was Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. She flew Vostok 6. She spent about 3 days in space and also orbitted the Earth 48 times. Her father was killed in World War 2 and left her mother to raise 3 childrren on her own. She didn't statr school till she was 8 and left school when she was 16.
  • Luna 9

    Luna becomes to be the first to soft-land on the moon and make it back to Earth. Luna 9 was designed special for safely landing and to take pictures from the surface to the moon.
  • 3 Men Killed in Apollo 1 Capsule

    Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee killed in Apollo 1 Capsule with testing launch pad so they could take off into space. They died of a fire that swpt through the rocket.The fire started where the electrical cords were and oxegen stuff was.
  • Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz

    Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz Aldrin were the first ones to step on the moon. " One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." They were in the Apllo 11 and that was the first rocket that made it safely up to the moon with 3 humans in it. NASA study for two years seaching for the best place to make the landing.
  • Ending of The Space Race

    The Soviet Union and the United States of America started working together. The Americans set up an Apollo Command module. There was five people who designed this. Three Americans and two Russians.
