    During the Middle Ages, drawings and paintings were often of religious figures to express messages of the Bible. Most drawings during this time could not be recovered because they were mainly used as a preparatory stage before creating a painting.

Scientists would use drawing to record their findings about the physical world. During this time chalk, charcoal, and paper became readily available making drawing more intricate and affordable.

    The Baroque period was a time of advancement in drawing. Water colors and ink washes were introduced along with intricate open composition drawings. Drawings became more realistic and common when the sketchbook was made making it easy for an artist to draw landscapes outside and not have to memorize what it looked like to paint later. Drawings became more livelier and had flowing lines that seemed to flow off the page.

In this time, artist also began to create art that went off the traditional academic training. Art movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, an fauvism were created during this time. Many pieces that are still famously known today were made during this period.
