  • John Dalton's Atom

    John Dalton's Atom
ImgHis main focus was to help understandthe behavior and property of gases. He thought that were like hard tiny balls. He believed that the different atoms could be identified from one another by their weight this is because each element has a different mass. He determined that all atoms can't be made or destroyed, all atoms of the same element are identical, and different elements have different types of atoms. info from http://www.studentsoftheworld.info/sites/science/atoms.php

    Erenst Rutherford
erenst rutherford pictureRutherford knew that atoms consist of a compact positively charged nucleus, around which circulate negative electrons at a relatively large distance. he determined that the nucleus occupies less than one thousand million millionth of the atomic voulume but contains almost all of the atoms mass. info from erenst rutherford
  • Cathode Rays

     Cathode Rays
cathode ray picturecathode raysWilliam Crookes used the vacuum tube made by Heinrich Geissler to discover the cathode rays. He created a glass vacuum tube which had a zinc sulfide coating on the inside of one end a metal cathode imbedded in the other end and a metal anode in the shape of a cross in the middle of the tube. When electricity was run through the apparatus, an image of the cross appeared and the zinc sulfide glowed. He hypothesized that there were rays coming from the cathode.
  • Niels Bohr

    Niels Bohr
He introduced the theroy that electrons orbited around the atoms nucleus. He also introduced that electrons could drop from a higher orbit to a lower one. niels bohr
  • Discovery of X-rays

    Discovery of X-rays
x-ray pictureDiscovery of x-raysWilhelm Roentgen accidentally discovered x-rays. He was researching the glow produced by cathode rays. He did his research in a dark room where he noticed a bottle of barium platinocyanide was glowing on a shelf. He discovered that the rays could also pass through glass, cardboard, and walls. The rays were then called x-rays.
  • Pitchblend

    Pitchblend
    Pitchblend
Henri Becquerel discoverd a property of the pitchblend compound when he was studying the fluorescence of pitchblend. Pitchblend gave a fluorescent light with or without the aid of the sunlight.
  • JJ Thomson

    JJ Thomson
JJ ThomsonHis experiments prompted him to make a bold proposal: these mysterious rays are streams of particles much smaller than atoms, they are in fact minuscule pieces of atoms. He called these particles "corpuscles," and suggested that they might make up all of the matter in atoms. picture from http://www.google.com/imgres?q=jj+thomson+view+of+the+atom&hl=en&gbv=2&biw=1001&bih=390&tbm=isch&tbnid=MqiUCAdhv7YfdM:&imgrefurl=ht

manhattan projectThe Manhattan ProjectAlbert Einstein and Enrico Fermi warned the U.S. that Germany was doing extensive research of atomic fussion reaction which would then create the atomic bomb. So, the U.S. started to do research to develope the very first working nuclear fussion reactor. This happened below the University of Chicago football field.
