  • Establishment of the Hitler youth

    On the 4th of july the nazi youth movement was renamed and established as the Hitler youth which became attached and run by the SA. Hitler believed that the support of the youth was vital for the future of the third reich and aimed, through the hitler youth programme to produce a generation of loyal supporters of the nazi views.
    Posters were used to attract more members and membership rose from 5,000 in 1925 to 25,000 in 1930.

    Schools became controlled by the Reich ministry of education.
    Teaching profession "reconditioned" politically unreliable individuals were removed plus jewish teachers were banned, also women were encouraged to conform with nazi values by returning to the home.
    The nation socialist teachers league was established. Its influence and interference began to grow.

    Curricula and syllabi were adapted to fit in with the nazi ideal, a much greater emphasis was place on PE, so that 15% of school time was given over to it, PE teachers assumed an increased status and importance in the school hierarchy.
    On the academic front, RS was dropped to downgrade the imprtance of christianity, whereas german, biology and history became the focus of special attention.

    German lang and lit were studied to create a consciousness of being German and to incultcate a martial and nationalistic spirit.
    Biology became the means by which to deliver nazi racial theory; ethnic classification, pop policy and racial genetics were all intergrated into the syllabus.
    History was given a special place in the nazi curriculum, so that the glories of the german nationalism could be emphasized.

    Elite schools were created – these were intended to prepare the best of Germany’s youth for future political leadership, were modelled on the principles of the HJ + focused on physical training, paramilitary activities + political ed. The 21 Napolas (National Political Educational Institutions) + the 10 Adolf Hitler Schools were both for boys of Secondary school age + the 3 Ordensburgen for boys of college age.
    Denominational schools declined.
