Government is in Debt
By the 1780's The French Government was in major debt. Louis XVI had been left debt by the former king and he borrowed heavy to help the American Revolution. Louis and his queen spent money on pleasure items. This event was important because it forced Louis to impose taxes, it showed he was a weak leader. Voting established National Assembly
After a long night of debate a vote was held that one with overwhelming majority. The members of the Third Estate voted to Form the National Assembly. This ended absolute Monarchy and was the beginning of a representative government. This event was important because it was the first deliberate act of the revolution.

Third estates were locked out of their meeting room.
The members of the third estates found themselves locked out of their meeting room. They then broke into a indoor tennis court to form a new constitution. They made the tennis court oath that no one left until they had it completed. This was important because it formed a new constitution as well as gained members.

Storming the Bastille
Rumors were flying the Louis was going to use armed people to put an end to the revolution. People started panicking and a group of angry people stormed the Bastille looking for weapons. They killed several guards and paraded their heads around. This event is important because it is still today a very symbolic day to the French people.

Wave of Great Fear
This wave of great fear swept of France. From one village to the next battles were breaking out as well as rumors were flying. Peasants became outlaws themselves, burning and destroying documents that made them pay. This is an important event because it lasted a long time and it caused people to just run around in senseless panic.

Rights of Man
The national assembly adopted this statement the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of Citizen. It stated that "each man is born free and has equal rights". These rights gave citizens freedom of speech and of justice as well as several other things. This event is important because it gave citizens freedom and rights.

Louis XVI Runs away
Louis was worried about his fate as a monarch. Some of his advisers had told him that both him and his family were in danger. He and his family tried to escape but were caught at the border and escorted back. This sealed his fate as a monarch. This was important because it showed the Revolution was making serious ground.

Louis is removed from office. The national convention forms and gets rid of monarchy and declares France as republic. Jacobins take control, under new government Louis is tried of treason and sentenced death. This is important because it is a huge step and goal accomplished in the revolution. Robespierre gains control
Robespierre became the leader of the committee of public safety. For the next year he ruled as a Dictator. This period is known as the reign of terror. Several people were killed for no reason in this period. July 1794 Robespierre was sentenced to death. This was important because so many people died and it was a step backwards in the goals of the revolution.

Napoleon takes control ending the French revolution
In 1796 Napoleon was named the leader of the French army. He won several successful battles. By November 1999 Napoleon had led in a government seize and assumed the title first consul and was now the leader with dictator powers.
