    French Revolution

  • Period: to

    Financial Crisis of 1787 - 1789

Half of the national budget went to pay interest for debt so the French Government started going bankrupt. Most of the debt was due to Marie Antoinette and her constant splurging on clothes and other things.
This went against the Declaration because, in effect, they unfairly pushed all of the heavy taxes onto the Third Estate. Therefore, they were not treated equally, as the Declaration states they should.
  • Estates Gerneral

    Estates Gerneral
Ordered elections and the States General met at Versailles. The purpose of the king was to obtain the assembly's consent to a general fiscal reform.-1789 By letting people vote it followed the rules of the constution.
  • Creation of The National Assembly

    Creation of The National Assembly
This was a group formed by the people of the third estate. The people of this estate created the National Assembly, since they represented most of the nation. They took away some of the rights and powers of the king..- Began June, 17, 1789- They were trying to prove they were equal.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    Tennis Court Oath
The Estates broke from Estates General and drew up their own constitution. On this day, they were locked out of their normal assembly place so they met in the tennis court and made an oath to keep meeting until the government was changed.
It supported the Declaration because it helped push along the process of getting it into effect.
  • Storming the Bastille

    Storming the Bastille
In search of gunpowder, citizens of France begin to tear down the Bastille, brick by brick.
This doesn’t go against the Declaration because it says that you can preserve certain rights such as liberty, property, security and, namely, resistance to oppression. They resisted their oppression here.
  • Great Fear

    Great Fear
A period of panic for the third estate the king was threatening to overrule them. Peasants rose and some fought back against their lords. This went agianst the constution because in the constution it states that all men should be treated equal but by the higher people treating the third estate differently they went agianst the constution.
  • The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen
On this date, the declaration was issued by the French assembly.
This supported the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen because it put it into effect here, to make a better, fairer government for the people of France.
  • Creation of The National Convention

    Creation of The National Convention
Was elected to write the new constitution for France after the overthrown monarchy. There were 749 people including buisnessmen, tradesmen, and men of other professions. This doesn't go agianst the rights of man because they were writing those ideas down to make them dfficial so people would follow these new ideas.
  • Important Actions of The National Convention

Important Actions of The National Convention
Governed France, and worked to write the new Constution, they modeled it off of the American Constution. -1792 By writing their ideas in to an official document the people in france were more likely to follow them.
  • Execution of Louis XVI

    Execution of Louis XVI
Robespierre stated that the revolution could only survive and thrive with the death of a king and because of that, Louis XVI was taken and sentenced to death on the guillotine. This didn't support the Declaration because they killed the king JUST because he had been their king and the Declaration says that men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Their only reason for killing Louis was because he was the king. That's unjust because he should be treated no different from other citizens.
  • Period: to

    Reign of Terror

Citizens feared the guillotine as others began to be falsely accused and executed left and right. People lived in fear and only promoted the revolution because of this. This did not support the Declaration because the government was not being fair and just, and thousands of innocent people died, especially people of the Third Estate. On top of that, it also says that no one shall be disquieted on account of his opinions, and people were getting arrested because of their opinions.
  • Napoleon's Rise to Power

    Napoleon's Rise to Power
Following a coup d’etat, Napoleon becomes the First Consul of the new French government
This did not support support the Declaration because he became like their king and the Declaration states that all men are created equal and are to be treated as such, but he was not.
  • Important Napoleonic Reforms

    Important Napoleonic Reforms
The law was based on the idea that all men were equal before the law. It guaranteed individual rights except for women and blacks and the security of property.-1804. This goes along with the rights of man because it states on number one " Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social destinctrions may be found only apon thr general good." This says that all MEN are created equal but it says nothing about wonen and it alsosays that there may be acceptions.
  • Invasion of Russia

    Invasion of Russia
Napoleon led the French army into Russia to invade.
This went along with the Declaration because it said that “the security of the rights of man and of the citizen requires public military forces.”
  • Exile to Elba

    Exile to Elba
After abdicating the throne, Napoleon is banished by Treaty of Fontainebleau to the Mediterranean island of Elba
This went along with the Declaration because the victors of the War of the Sixth Coalition signed a treaty with France, stating that Napoleon should abdicate the throne and be exiled. It states in the Declaration that “law can only prohibit such actions as are hurtful to society” and had he not been exiled, he would have been a threat to the French society’s peace.
  • Congress of Vienna

    Congress of Vienna
Reorganized Europe after Napoleon. People from all over were represented in the congress, one of their main goals was to form a new balance of power. But, they didn't want to cause fighting because they didn't want another war.November 1, 1814-June 8,1815. This didn't go agianst the constution because they allowed people from all over to participate.
  • Battle of Waterloo

    Battle of Waterloo
The winners were The British, Germans, Belgians, Dutch and Prussians. In this battle, the French Empire under the leadership of Michael Ney and Napoleon Bonaparte were defeated by the Seventh Coalition and a Prussian Army. I think this didn't go agianst the Rights of Man because in it it says that public military forces are required to protect the people.
