Frederick Bailey is taught to read. His master's wife kindly taught him. When his master caught them, he ordered his wife to stop, because its against the law. But, against her husband's orders, she continues to teach Fred to read. -
Speaking His Mind
Frederick Douglass speaks his mind on slavery at an abolitionist meeting. The meeting took place in Massachusetts. The abolitionists were impressed with Fred's speech. After the speech took place, He was offered a job at the Anti-Slavery Society as a lecturer. He gladly accepted. -

Fred escapes from America and heads out to Europe. He decides to escape slavery for freedom. He also decides to go to Scotland. In his time there, He makes speeches and joins abolitionist movements. -
Movin On Up!
During the year of 1847, Douglass publishes the first issue of the North Star. The North Star is a newspaper published weekly in Rochester, New York. The newspaper was an abolitionist script. The main topics were points of slavery and freedom.
Becomes an eloquent spokesman for emancipation and for the rights of
women.
Meets John Brown in Springfield, Massachusetts. -
Underground Railroad
Along with the famous Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douyglass fights along side to help slaves escape slavery. The route used to help slaves escape was called the Underground Railroad. The two runaways made several trips back and forth to get the slaves to freedom. -
Second Biography
Douglass publishes his second book in 1855. The book was his life story, written by himself. The book is called My Bondage and Freedom. The book tells about his obstacles and victories of his escape. It is basically a remake of his first biography, but more detailed and precise. -
2nd Wife
Frederick Douglass, after escaping to freedom, marries. The woman he marries is a white abolitionist named Helen Pitts. The woman was his second wife. Helen is from Rochester, New York. Together, they traveled to England, France, Italy, Egypt and Greece in the years 1886-87. -
Death
Frederick Douglass dies on February 20 . The place of his death is at Cedar Hill. He died after attending a women's rights meeting. His wife, Helen Pitts Douglass continues to work to maintain their home in memory.
