    In France, at the request of Napoleon, Appert developed a way to preserve food in glass jars with wire and wax. In England, Durrrand developed the process using tin cans.
  • Mason Jar

    John Mason developed jar with molded screw top, wire clamp, and replaceable rubber ring lid.
  • Pasteur uses heat

    Luis Pasteur heats wine to 122-140 degrees to prevent (acetobacter from) turning wine to vinegar.
  • Germ Theory

    Pasteur's experiments convince American and European scientists to adopt Germ Theory (and abandon the competing belief that enzymes reacted spontaneously.)
  • NYC Pasteurizes Milk

    New York City mandates all milk be Pasteurized. Raw milk killed thousands, particularly children, from Tuberculosis and food poisoning but after NYC showed dramatic health improvement other cities followed.
