    John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th U.S. president. He is mostly known for his work with the space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. He is also known for his supposed secret relations with Marilyn Monroe. Forest meets Kennedy shortly before he gets assassinated.

Forest tells his story of meeting the president for being chosen in the All American football team, and mentions how he did get killed.

    George Wallace stands in way of students
    George Wallace was the 45th governor of Alabama, and was a strong supporter of segregation. When two African American students tried to enter class at the University of Alabama, Wallace stood in the door to block them. JFK then calls troops to the campus to force Wallace to allow the students to enter. Forest is present at the campus during this, because he is playing football.. He see's Wallace and even picks up one of the students notebooks.

    Forrest joins the Vietnam War
    Forrest joins the Vietnam War (1955-1975), but gets sent home after being shot in the buttocks. He saved many men and was even awarded the Medal of Honor. The Vietnam War was one of the most gruesome wars of the 20th century. America did not succeed and lost the war. U.S. soldiers fought in terrible conditions and had to fight the Vietcong's geurilla warfare. After graduating from Alabama, Forrest chooses to join the army.

    One main reason that the Vietnam war was unsuccessful is that, there was no support for the troops at the homeland. The hippies and other groups wanted the war to end, and didn't support the countries choice of joining the war. Many forms of protest was uses, including songs! Forrest's girl-Jenny- has joined the counter culture movement and he even speaks at a rally.

    Finally, even after JFK's assassination- his efforts succeeded and the U.S. were the first to put a human on the moon. Apollo 11 was the name of the shuttle that transported the men. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first human to step onto the lunar surface; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. This is on the t.v. as everyone watches Gump.

    The Watergate scandal happened when Nixon, a Republican, was tied to a crime in which former FBI and CIA agents broke into the offices of the Democratic Party and George McGovern (the Presidential candidate). Nixon's helpers listened to phone lines and secret papers were stolen. This scandal led to Nixon resigning.. the only president to do so. In the movie, Gump can see the agents looking through the papers and stealing things from his hotel window.

    Hurricane Carmen was the strongest hurricane of 1974. The storm went across the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula and then cut across Louisiana. The hurricane peaked at Category 4 strength during her life. In the movie, Gump and Lt. Dan were on the shrimp boat when Carmen hit LA. This caused all the other shrimp boats to be destroyed, leaving them to be the most successful and earning much money.

Forrest invests in a "fruit company" after his mother dies. This company was in fact, Apple.
