    Aristotle's Philosophy

Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who said that species were permenant, perfect, and immutable. He also said the increased in complexity with humans at top. In B.C. but time line does not give option to display that.

    Creationist View is Prominent

Natural Theology, or Creationism states that species are permenant, perfect, and immutable. Dates are approximated
  • Period: to

    Carolus Linnaeus

Swedish physician, He developed hierarchical classifications cheme and binomial nomeclature. The binomial is always underlined or italicized, genus name is capitalized, specific epithet is always lower case.
  • Period: to

    James Hutton

Scottiosh geologist, he proposed the earth was millions of years old, rather than the old belief of thousands. Offered the alternative to catastrophism, gradualism, which was the the changes in the earth's crust were slow and continuous processes.
  • Period: to

    Jean Baptiste Lamarck

One of the 18th/19th centuries biologists who hypothesized that species are not immutable and can evolve. Lamarck stated that changes are adaptations to the enviorment and are aquired in an organisms lifetime. He also stated the aquired traits were passed onto offspring. Lamarck also hypothesized the mechanism of evolution, Law of Use and Disuse, if a body part got used it got stronger, if it did not it deteriorated. Lamarck said the species with new traits would become a new species over time.
  • Period: to

    Thomas Malthus

English Demographer, stated plants and animals produce more offspring than resources can support, and as a result the struggle for existence is an inescapable consequence. Each species struggles for food, living space, and mates.
  • Period: to

    Georges Cuvier

French anatomist, played a large part in the development of palentology. Said deeper strata contaion older taxa. Believed in catastrophism, when species disappear due to a catastrophic event of the earth's crust.
  • Period: to

    Charles Lyell

Scottish geologist who incorporated Hutton's gradualism into the theory of Uniformitarianism. Said geological processes were at uniform rates, and were building and wearing down the earth's crust. Also believed the earth was millions of years old. Published Principles of Geology 1830 throught 1833 in 3 volumes.
  • Period: to

    Charles Darwin

English man who conceived natural selection, or survival of the fittest, as the principal movement of adaptive evolution. Charles Lyell's Principals of Geology helped Darwin understand why he found sea shells in the Andes Mountains at 12000+ feet.
  • Period: to

    Alfred Russel Wallace

Independetly also concieved natural selection as the principal mechanism of adaptive evolution. He also said organisms evolved from common ancestors.
  • Lyell Hypothesis

Lyell presented the independently derived hypothesis to the Linnaen Society of London
