One of the 18th/19th centuries biologists who hypothesized that species are not immutable and can evolve. Lamarck stated that changes are adaptations to the enviorment and are aquired in an organisms lifetime. He also stated the aquired traits were passed onto offspring. Lamarck also hypothesized the mechanism of evolution, Law of Use and Disuse, if a body part got used it got stronger, if it did not it deteriorated. Lamarck said the species with new traits would become a new species over time. -

English man who conceived natural selection, or survival of the fittest, as the principal movement of adaptive evolution. Charles Lyell's Principals of Geology helped Darwin understand why he found sea shells in the Andes Mountains at 12000+ feet. -
