Events that led to the American Independence

  • French and Indian War (1754-1763)

    French and Indian War (1754-1763)
    It was a fight between the British and the French. The british won which gave them control over the colonists.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Britan was given all the land east of the Mississippi.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The british forbided colonists to go west of the Appalachians,because they wouldn't be able to protect them. But most colonists went anyways.
  • Sugar Act

    Put taxes of sugar and mollases. The colonists didnt want to have to pay anymore taxes/money so they rebeled against it.
  • Stamp Act

    Put a tax on every peice of paper. Colonists boycotted with the stamp act congress.
  • Writs of Assistance

    British officials were given the right to search any ship they wanted to. Merchants felt like it was an invasion of privacy.
  • Townshend Acts

    Taxed various household item (milk, tea, paper, galss, etc.). Colonists boycoyyed against it.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    Colonists had to provide housing fo british soldiers. They hated it but little could be done.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    5 colonists were killed by british soldiers during a riot. Sam Adams called it a massacre to go against britan.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Because the Boston Port closed the colonists couldnt hold town meetings, so the colonies began to unify and the First Continental Congress met.

    Written by Patrick Henry at the Virgina House of Burgeses that "opened up people's eyes" to the british unfairness ("Give me liberty or give me death")
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    First shot of the Revolution was fired there. The Malitia were ordered not to "fire until you see the whites of their (the british's) eyes".
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Lexington- 700 British vs 70 Malitian (only 8 malitions died)
    Concord- 700 Britan vs 14,000 Malitian, British was forced to retreat!)
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    They met in philidelphia and created theOlive Branch Petition to declare loyalty to the British but ask for them to repel theIntolerable Acts.
  • Battle of New York

    British wanted to capture New York so they attacked Washingtons army. There was alot of death but Washington avoided being captured. The British occupied New York for the rest of the war.

  • Battle of Trenton 1776

    Washington launched suprise attack on Germans.
  • Winter at Valley Forge 1777-1778

    Very brutal, long, cold winter. The troops were in desperate need for food and water so many men died of that and also of frostbite.
  • Battle of Princeton 1777

    In New Jersey Washington captured 300 British.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    General Horatio Gates surrounded Burgoynes remaining forces at saratoga. Burgoyne had to surrender his army.
