Proposed banning slavery in the territory acquired from mexic,except Texas. congress refused to pass it. Its impact was it led to the creation of the FREE SOIL PARTY, a political party dedicated to stopping the expantion of slavery. -
compromise of 1850
To please the north, congress agreed to admit California as a free state and abolision the slave trade in Washington,D.C. To please the south,congress would let territories decide if they were going to be slave or free, and they would pass a stronger law to help slave holders recapture runaway slaves FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW. Its impact was it failed to hold union together and agered northerners. -
The Fugitive slave act
Allowed slavehplders to Recapture runaway slaves. Southerners felt the act was justified because slaves were property. Northerners Resented the act. -

North:: Slavery is horrible,cruel and is unacceptable.
South:: Yankee Abolitionist Propaganda. -
Kansas-Nebraska act
Allowed the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide for themselves (Popular Sovereignty) whether they wanted to allow slavery or not.
Pro-slavery and Anti-slavery people began flooding into Kansas and Nebraska so they could force the state to become what they wanted it to be. -
Bleeding Kansas
Small scale civil war in Kansas.
"Bleeding Kansas" and "Bleeding Sumner" became rallying cries for the Anti-slavery Northerners and the new political party. -
The case of Dred Scott
Dred scott sued for his freedom after briefly living with his owners on free soil in the north.Ruling of the judge (Slaves were not citizens,so they could not bring suit into court,slaves were property.)
The Missouri Compromise, which had banned slavery, Unconstitutional.
Southerners were overjoyed!
Northerners were upset and began joining the Republican Party in droves. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
Lincoln and Douglas were running for Senator in Illinois. LIncoln's position=Slavery was wrong but protected by the constitution.
Lincoln lost the election but became Nationally Famous. -
Raid on Harper's ferry
John Brown and follower's seized the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry killing 4 people. Goal=Stur up a slave revolt in Virginia and end slavery. It didn't work.
Brown Became a MARTYR (HERO) in the cause of slavery. -
The election of 1860
Lincold won the election. Southern states secede, ( withdraw from the union) -
Fort Sumpter
Lincoln notified Davis ( president of the confederate states of America) that he was sending supplies the the fort. South opened fire on April 12, 1861. The union forces being under supplied had to surrender. War has begun!
