  • The British gain control of the Cape Colony

    The British occupied the Cape in 1795. The British then relinquish the colony to the Dutch in 1802 but took it back in 1806
  • Opium Wars

    Two wars waged between the Qing dynasty and Western power. The first war was (1839-42) China v. Britain. The second war was (1856-60) Britain & France v. China
  • Treaty of Nanking

    A peace treaty that ended the first Opium War. China paid the British an indemnity ceded the territory of Hong Kong and agreed to establish a “fair and responsible” tariff
  • Indian Revolt

    A unsuccessful uprising in India against the rule of the British East India Company. Resulted in British victory and a Suppression of revolt.
  • Otto Von Bismarck becomes Chancellor of Prussia

    Otto Avon Bismarck served as the Chancellor of Prussia (1862-73).His goal was to strengthen the position of Prussia in Europe
  • Danish War

    A conflict over the settlement of the Schleswig- Holstein. Which was a problem rising between the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein to Denmark.
  • Austro-Prussian War AKA Seven Weeks War

    A war between the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia. Results ended with Prussia victory which meant the exclusion of Austria from Germany
  • Tokugawa Shogun lost power and the Japanese Emperor was restored power .

    Tokugawa lost his power and the emperor returned to the supreme position. The emperor used the name Meiji which means enlightened rule.
  • Suez Canal Open

    On November 17,1869, the Suez Canal was opened to navigation. When opened the Suez Canal was 25 feet deep,72 feet wide at the bottom and about 300 feet wide at the surface
  • Franco-Prussian War

    War where a coalition of German states led by Prussia defeated France. The war was the end of French influence in Europe and unified Germany.
  • Prussia declares a German Empire

    The empire was founded after the successful wars by Prussia. The empire was named The Second Reich and gave the title of German Emperor to William I the king of Prussia.
  • Great Britain occupy Egypt

    British invaded and conquered Egypt to put down a revolt of Egyptian army officers. Britain occupied Egypt and controlled their government.
  • France occupy Djibouti

    France took possession of Djibouti and called it “French Somalia”.
    Djibouti become apart of the French Republic.
  • Berlin Conference

    Played a major role in the colonization of Africa. It gave European nations the opportunity to take control of Africa. They disregard the Natives that were there before them
  • The beginning of the Scramble for Africa

    The Berlin Conference started the Scramble for Africa. Thirteen European countries and the United States met in Berlin to agree the rules of African colonization. From 1884 to 1914 the continent was conflicted as they took territory
  • France gain control of Indochina

    France obtained control over north Vietnam after its victory over China. The France wanted to convert the Vietnamese to Catholicism.
  • Convention of Constantinople

    Treaty signed by the Uk,Germany, Austria-Hungary,Spain, France,Italy, the Netherlands, the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Established the Suez Canal as an international waterway open to all in war and peace.
  • Battle of Adwa

    The climactic battle of the First Italo-Ethiopia War. Ethiopian men and women defeated the Italian army.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Staged by an anti-foreigner Chinese society known for boxing. An uprising against foreigners that occurred in China.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    The war was between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan. A naval conflict with ships exchanging fire in the waters surrounding the Korean Peninsula.
  • Emperor Meiji died

    Emperor Meiji died July 30, 1912. He died from complications of his diabetes.
  • Assassination of Archduke

    Archduke was assassinated June 28, 1914. His death sparked a World War.
