    Battle of the Atlantic

    Allied tanker sinksThe allied victory was important to deciding the outcome of WWII. By winning the Battle of the Atlantic, Allied shipping was safe from Axis threats and allied countries could continually supply the warfront. March 1943 was the turning point of the battle where Allied advantages in intel allowed them to destroy many Axis subs. It was also the first time more German subs were destroyed than Allied ships.
  • Operation Vulcan

    Afrika Korps surrenderOperation Vulcan was an allied victory at Tunis where Romme's forces surrendered. Was important to the allies as Russia was getting dominated by the Germans and needed a second front opened up to divert troops off of Russia. It also denied Hitler from controlling Egypt and Suez Canal which was important for allied shipping as well as for sanctioning Axis shipping.
  • Operation Husky

    Operation Husky
    Operation Husky was an allied success. The allies' goals were fulfilled. They wanted to open up the Mediterrean to use it as a sea route, as well as open up a route to invade Italy. Allied casualities were less than expected (16000 compared to 164000 axis casualities). By July 22 capital of Sicily captured.
  • Operation Gomerrah

    Operation Gomerrah
    Allied bombers bombed the city of Hamburg with 2300 tons of bombs within one hour on July 24 causing fire to spread uncontrollably. The next ten days completely destroyed the city. Fear was undeniable in the German population. The bombings also temporary stopped war production in Hamburg. This included the aircraft industry, chemical industry but most importantly, the submarine building industry (Allies' original target)
  • Allied invasion of mainland Italy

    Allied invasion of mainland Italy
    Allies invasion of Sicily before paved the pathway for them to attack Italy through the "toe." Italian goverment agreed to surrender to the allies and in return, the italians would be treated with leniency if they aided the allies in removing Germany from Italy. Germany rescued Mussolini from a prison in which he became a Nazi leader. Was significant because it now removed an axis power and opened an official 2nd war front against Germany
  • D-Day landings

    D-Day landings
    Allied troops land in Normandy, France and establish a foot-hold here. Allowed the allies to defeat German resistance here and liberate Paris from German control. Allies were able to crack through the German control on the western front. Now with 100,000 allied troops on the western front as well as many others coming in towards Germany from Italy, Germany was pinched into a tight spot
