Yosemite Valley
Passed by Congress and signed by President Lincoln, this act created the first state park. It set aside 20,000 acres in California, which is now known as Yosemite Valley. -
Yellowstone National Park
Congress passed a bill that was signed by President Ulysses S. Grant to establish the world's first national park. Yellowstone National Park is 2,219,791 acres, and is located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. -
The Boone and Crockett Club
This club was founded by Theodore Roosevelt and George Grinnell. The organization's purpose is to promote ethical hunting laws and wildlife conservation. This club helped to protect various natural park lands and animals. -
Forest Reserve Act
This act allowed presidents to set aside forest lands. Presidents Harrison, Cleveland, and McKinley set aside approximatley 50,000,000 acres through this act. It established the first federal forest reserve. -
Lacey Act of 1900
This act, signed by President McKinley, protects plants and wildlife, it was enacted because of illegal activity related to stealing plants and animals. It was introduced by Representative Lacey, hence the name Lacey Act. -
Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge
President Roosevelt ordered the creation of the first national wild refuge. It was established to protect various birds from poachers. It is located east of Sebastian, Florida. -
The Antiquities Act
Passed by Congress and signed by President Roosevelt, this act was at first established for the preservation and protection of Native American artifacts and monuments. Many monuments, natural reserves, and the like are protected under it. -
National Park Service
The National Park Service was established as a branch of the Department of the Interior. It manages all national parks, monuments, and the like. -
The General Wildlife Federation
The General Wildlife Federation was established to educate the public about American nature and wildlife. Currently, it is nation's largest grassroot conservation agency. It also provides wildlife educational programs for children, businesses, and adults. -
"Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson
Written by aquatic biologist Rachel Carson, this book reveal the harmful side effects of insecticides. Rachel Carson was a well-known natural history author. Due to this publication, the modern environmental movement was created. -
Clean Air Act
This act allows the EPA to regulate the air emissions and to set air quality standards on a national level. At first it was a research program, but then it was expanded in 1967. -
The Wilderness Preservation Act
The Wilderness Preservation Act established the National Wilderness Preservation System, which granted wilderness areas special protective status. It was signed by President Johnson. Due to this act, The National Wilderness Preservation Sytem was established. -
Earth Day

This act allows the EPA to track and ban chemicals that are harmful to the citizens. It also controls the production of new chemicals. It was introduced in Congress by Senator John V. Tunney. -
The Kyoto Protocol
Though it was passed many years before, it was not until 2005 that it went into effect. This environmental treaty requires many countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions due to recent climate change. -
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
As part of the Recovery Act, it invests in multiple environmental protective works around the country, along with investing in technological advancements.
