Educational Major Events throughout the last 250 Years

  • Common (Public) Schools

    Common schools, known as public schools today, were the first schools to be open to all White children free of charge. Prior to these school was to be paid for, and often only occupied by the rich families' children. These schools were open to all white children of all backgrounds and classes.
  • 1862 Homestead Act

    President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Homestead Act, a program designed to grant public land to small farmers at low cost. This actually affected the education system greatly because of the immigration of farmers. Therefore, building and spreading more school buildings due to the large amount of people immigrating. The more schools built, the more opportunities for children to be educated.
  • Ballpoint Pen

    The Ballpoint pen was a huge technological invention for the educational system along with everyday life, for obviously reasons. Before the ballpoint pen you had to dip a feather or something into ink to write something. So the ballpoint pen allowed for students to work a lot faster and better.
  • 1896 Plessy V. Ferguson

    The Supreme Court's ruling in Plessy effectively established the rule that "separate" facilities for blacks and whites were constitutional as long as they were "equal". This ushered an era of legally sanctioned racial segregated schools.
  • Radio

    The technological invention of the radio was huge for education! It allowed students to learn even from home, if the teacher had a radio on hand to transmit the audio. It allowed for education to spread and allowed education to reach a ton of more people.
  • Feminization of Teaching

    This Movement established equality between and women, which allowed women to be teachers. This is huge, and had a huge impact even today. Think about it, probably 80% of teachers nowadays are women.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    The Civil Rights Movement enlisted the federal government in the effort to equalize educational opportunities for children of color. This has influenced our educational history because we have equal opportunities for all children no matter the color or culture. We welcome equality and all cultures in our schools.
  • 1954 Brown V. Board of Education

    This case reserved the ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson, ruling that segregated schools were not equal, and outlaws segregation. The decision held that the racial segregation of children in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The decision did not successfully desegregate public education in the United States directly, but it did put the Constitution on the side of racial equality.
  • 1957 Sputnik

    The Soviets make history be being the first to launch a satellite into orbit, the Sputnik. Believe it or not, this was actually huge for American education. More than $1 billion was poured into public school education for new science and math curriculums because of the Soviets making history with Sputnik. This furthered our technological abilities, along with furthering our studies and research, and overall bettering the education our children were receiving.
  • Overhead Projector

    The overhead projector was a technological invention that is something still depended on in classrooms today. I know for a fact the overhead projector was depended up throughout the 90s and most of the 2000s. It allowed teachers to project lessons upon a big screen for the whole class to see.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    As Part of President Johnson's war on poverty, the ESEA started Head Start, gave free lunches to those and need, and gave greater attention to special education. This allowed for more opportunities to receive a education, and also opened up opportunities to better our educational system as a whole.
  • Handheld Calculator

    This was deemed the greatest educational technological invented to date, for obvious reasons. This allowed for our education system to take off, and explore new avenues of math and science.
  • Videotape Recorder

    In my opinion, this was one of the most important technological inventions for education to date. Because it was the first of its kind. It allowed teachers, professors, scientists, and everyone to record their work and findings to spread and keep forever. This allowed education to take off, and has better our education ever since!
  • Title IX

    Title 9 stated that no person can be excluded from a school program on the basis of their sex. This gave rise to more women athletics and other education opportunities which previously were not available to females.
  • The Web

    The World Wide Web changed education into what we know it as now. Everything we do concerning education nowadays, involves the invention of the Web.
  • Laptop

    The laptop was another huge invention for the education world. Nowadays almost everything is done and kept stored on laptops, within the classroom.
  • WiFi

    This technological invention changed the educational system along with the whole world! Without the WiFi education today, would probably not even be possible. Everything we do now runs through the WiFi
  • No Child Left Behind

    This Act set new government test standards that students must reach. This program was set in to help disadvantaged students reach the same goals as advanced students. However, this act has caused some controversy because some teachers starting teaching to strictly meet those standards. This was to protect their own job, because everything was based on how well students met those standards. This was a Huge deal in the education system.
  • Social Media

    In 2005 Youtube came out, followed by Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram after that. Although, social media can sometimes be bad, social media is a huge part of our education. Information found across the world can be on your phone in a matter of seconds, its insane if you think about it! Social is the reason our research and findings are so great today. Information changes hands in a matter of second between everyone around the world.
  • iPad

    The iPad was a huge invention for technological educational advances. Nowadays a ton of schools have something called "1 to 1" which is where every student has their own computer or iPad. I have observed many classrooms that run their whole class on iPad lessons guided by the teacher. Also all of the 1000s of educational apps, have aided in education greatly!
