    when men went off to WWI to fight in 1917, millions of women took their places in factories and mines.

    The bombings also whipped up a red scare frenzy topped only by racial violence. When blacks returned from war, many feared the soldiers would demand their rights and lynched to preempt a civil rights movement. Likewise, labor launched many strikes against capital, but the public suspected communists. The public reaction destroyed the labor movement. It took the GrBy 1920, these events weighed heavily on the country as a depression struck. Disillusioned, Americans wanted life to return to normal.

    the "Red scare" contributed to the rise of nativism-- a dislike of foreigners. some foreigners suspected of having radical sympathetic were deported. Some parts of the country even saw a revival of the Ku Klux Klan.

People wanted to escape Wilson and international entanglements and focus on living. After expunging Wilson, the country entered into an economic and cultural boom, which lasted until the Stock Market collapsed in 1929

In fact, Hoover’s interventionist policies not only failed to stop the downward economic spiral following the stock market crash of 1929, but they made the spiral worse.

    1.) Overproduction- The 1920's witnessed the rapid expansion of new products like cars, radios, and refrigerators. Many consumers lacked the money to buy these goods. 2.) Stock market crash-October 29th, 1929 the stock market crashed. People fraintically tried to sell all thier stocks, as share prices plunged. The effects of the crash quickly spread.

    Recovery- Measures were designed to restore the economy by increasing incentives to produde & by rebuilding peopls purchasing power.
    Reform- Measures were aimed at remedying defects in nations economy to ensure that another depression would never strike again. These measures still affect us today.

    The soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made satelite, into space. With space missiled, the Soviet Union would have the ability to fire nuclear weapons at the United States from across the globe.
