Development of Gravity Theories

  • Newton

    Newton
Newton said that objects on Earth were acted upon the same as celestial bodies. Gravity kept us from flying off of the Earth. By showing the similarities between his laws and Kepler's laws(Planetary Orbit) he moved on from the heliocentric models. Newton created the three laws of motion.
  • Henry Cavendish

    Henry Cavendish
Using the Torsion Balance he tried to prove Newton's three laws to be true. The device was originally created to weigh the Earth using two bodies of mass.
  • Albert Einstein

    Albert Einstein
Einstein believed Newton's mechanics were outdated and came up with his own theory of relativity. He showed that mass and energy are effected by gravity. He also thought that space was an elipse which gave the feeling there was no gravity.
  • Ptolemy

    Ptolemy
His geocentric models of the solar system were accused of independent thought, but Ptolemy claimed his ideas came from astonomers that proceeded him. He still used spheres to represent large bodies, but his table showed past and future positions of those bodies. He also listed constellations.
  • Aristotle

    Aristotle
He believed the universe was made up of multiple spheres inside of each other and Earth was the center. He thought of everything made up of elements and gravity was caused by an object reaching for something closest to it's own element. He said heavier objects fell faster than lighter objects. He created the Geocentric model of the Solar System.
